Has anyone here tried using VOIP phone over 3G Internet connection and, if so, is it useable or not?
If you have tried it can you perhaps give your opinion on it? (Telstra/Bigpond or Optus?)
I reckon even if it's OK for half the time the cheap calls would be worth it.
Unfortunately the delay on mobile phones & VOIP calls tends to drive me crazy at times.
I'm beginning to think we should talk like over 2-way radios !!!
"do you agree ... over"
"yes I do ... over"
"That's a 10-4 rubber duckie ... over"
"gotta go ... over and out"

Re: VOIP over 3G?
Norman I have heard of that one but can you ring a house line number from it? Or direct to a mobile phone number?
I'm thinking of 'porting' my existing home phone number to a VOIP 'company' for incoming and outgoing calls.

Re: VOIP over 3G?
Ya can't port home Telstra nerd to VOIP. TELSTRA own them and won't release them for VOIP, that's what ADAM.com told me, so I got a new number. There is no reason VOIP won't work on 3G , VIBE and Skype work on it.

I replaced my Telstra line with ADAMs nAked VOIP system. Works like normal land line but cheaper.

Re: VOIP over 3G?
Thanks Russell.
Some time ago I converted all my Telstra stuff over to Internode.
Line, Home phone & Internet.
Once we know exactly what we're doing I might try porting that home number to voip & see how it goes.
My Internode VOIP is currently for outgoing only or in by other Internode VOIP persons.
Internode are a bit dear....... 18c for untimed calls. I can get 10c from my mobile internet provider over Optus 3G.
Was thinking of creating a "mobile" system.
For example a lithium battery in a small suitcase size box to power everything and contain all the hardware as well.
That way if I go in the MH or the boat or even return home I'll be able to quickly re-locate it.

Re: VOIP over 3G?
Just came across this thread.
I use Voip at home but will eventually ditch it when traveling. Switched my mobile to Boost and it seems to me to make sense in this situation as well. At $40 per mth with unlimited calls and SMS plus currently 3Gb download it is better value I feel. Your Voip is going to cost you minimum of $15 a mth and you still have your downloads and mobile phone to pay for, the $40 seems real good value to me even after they reduce the downloads soon after pressure from Telstra. On top of that they use the Telstra network so generally better coverage. I know they are only 3G but given that basically all of Australia is getting 3G at best apart from parts of major cities then I don't see this as a problem for travelers. This is also a prepaid deal so no plans to worry about. The only real hitch I have come across is the inability to set up an auto redraw with them. You have to remember to pay the next months fee every time.
By the way, my home Voip is Engin, $14.95 a mth for unlimited calls to landline, another $5 if you want to call overseas for free as well. Mobiles are pretty cheap but I call those through the mobile at no cost under the unlimited allowance.

Re: VOIP over 3G?
Maree uses Viber to talk to daughter in US - no international fees what so ever and no extra local fees, but we do have unlimited which does not include international.
The thing with Viber is that the recipient must have Viber on their phone too.
