What has happened to common courtesy?

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

I must say that I find it rare not to receive a thankyou after I've helped somebody, it does happen, but not often. I don't let it get to me if I don't get the thankyou, some people just seem too busy for common courtesy but I see it as their loss, not mine, it really is still greater to give than receive, but the thankyou is always appreciated.

Just speaking of this Dot isn't there something coming where the charity ambush is going to be banned. Every night at the same time we get a call from an 08 number. Telstra probably and going to tell us they can better our package if we go over to them.

We no longer answer our home phone because, even though we are on the "Do Not Call" register, this does not apply to charities, surveys etc and certainly the Indian call centres take not one bit of notice. I have told anyone who counts to leave a message. If I am at home I will pick up and if not I call them back. More often than not, all I hear is a dial tone as soon as the answering machine message starts. When we move to RV HB we will not have a landline.

And further to my original post, I have had a reply from the house sitter reference person thanking me and asking another question. So, I guess 1/3 is better than 0/3.
Cheers

Some years ago now back when land lines (you remember them don't ya) were still popular, I'd regularly get these marketing types ringing and ask for Mark. I'd say, "hang on", then yell out, "hey Mark, it's for you" and put the phone down. Then go on preparing the evening meal for me and the dog.

They knew you hadn't hung up as they could hear the noise from the kitchen (that's where the phone was) and you could hear them chatting to coworkers through the handset saying, "what's going on - have we been forgotten?" etc. Eventually they just died of boredom and gave up. All good fun while it lasted.

   Did that yesterday Dot.

Our Telstra prepaid wifi ELITE gizmo would only fire up in unsecured mode, so, after numerous searches on Mr Google & virtually getting nowhere I bit the bullet & rang the help line. Yep, you guessed it, Mr Phillipines came on line & after I told him what the problem was he asked:

Him: What is your account Nr?

Me: Don't need one - the wifi gizmo is prepaid.

Him: Ahh, hold on........

Him: What is your phone nr?

Me: Don't need one - the wifi gizmo is prepaid.

Him: Ahh, hold on........

Him: Umm, I will try & pass you to our technical department - is that ok?

Me: Well, it's a step in the right direction, thank you.

Pregnant pause.

Her: What is the nature of your problem?

Me: Didn't your previous male employee advise you of why he was transferring me to your department?

Her: Of course.

Me: Then perhaps you might give me an insight into how to solve the problem?

Her: What is the nature of your problem:

Me: Sigh... Never mind, I'll just get into my car, drive over to a Telstra shop & ask them direct. Have a nice day!

Her: But.... brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

At the Telstra shop.

Telstra man turned the gizmo on, looked at his computer & said:

Him: Your gizmo is unsecure!!

Me: No kidding, Clyde, so why do you suppose I'm here?

Him: To rectify the problem.

Me: Spot on Clyde.

Him: Smiling... OK. The original setting/password has been removed - therefore anyone seeing this can jump on your gizmo - free.

Me: Ed Zachary, Clive, now fix it huh?

Him: Sure, easy, just do this. Take your gizmo & simultaneously press the start & the WPS buttons & hold them like that for 20 seconds - this will revert the gizmo to the factory settings. There, done.

Me: Thanks Clyde, & I don't care what your workmates say about you - I reckon you're worth more money!!

Him: Can you give me that in writing?

Me, walking out the door: It's in the mail Clyde.

And it worked.

Nine years ago I had just arrived back in Townsville from Sydney after having a radical prostatectomy for cancer. My cancer was fairly aggressive and I was still wondering where I would end up.

I was sitting next to the phone contemplating my future, when it suddenly rang. Some nice lady said something about raising money for cancer and this money would be used to help cancer victims....something like that. I am not sure what she said exactly, as the word 'cancer' was racing through my head and I was still very much getting over the operation. Not thinking, I said "Great to hear...when do you pay me?"

There was stunned silence on the phone. "Sorry...I am sorry" she says and hangs up.

She probably thought I was being a smart aleck!

As a side note: My aggressive cancer did come back as a secondary. My specialist in Sydney sent me to Macquarie University Hospital early last year, where I had several months of a new type of radiation treatment. It was successful and I have no sign of the cancer now and I was left with very little side effects...except lots of gratitude for the specialist who only charged me the common fee for this very specialist private hospital treatment, allowing Medicare to pay for ALL OF the huge weekly bills.
