Injector servicing advise

Post by Pokey »

I am getting the injector pump serviced on the old Perkins 6-354 and need to do the injectors at the same time to ensure everything is AOK. Question is, I can get new injector nozzles, is it just a matter of replacing the old nozzles with the new or is there more to servicing the injectors. As you can see I am not a diesel fitter. If it is just the nozzles, well it isn't enough for a sheep station (or maybe some of the drought declared ones in Qld it may be) but there are a few pennies to be saved doing them myself.

It's the usual way to get them setup on the bench at an injector service centre.
That way a visual check can be made on the 'spray pattern' and to ensure they are all set at identical 'letoff' pressure (Chuck?)
Like a lot of things you could just throw them together and be lucky ......... depends how valuable the motor is to you?
I can ask Tony's opinion for confirmation if you like? Might be a while to get an answer though.

The injector body must be ultrasonically cleaned and the filter basket replaced before the new nozzles are fitted, otherwise you run the real risk of stuffing a brand new pintle and nozzle set.
Next the cracking pressure needs to be set to give the correct atomisation without dribbling and the same pressure for all injectors to maintain the correct fuel delivery . If the pressure is too low the atomisation will not be fine enough and bore washing will result destroying an otherwise good engine so a keen eye is needed to determine the spray pattern is correct. Spend the extra $$ and get it done by someone with the equipment and knowledge to get it right.
