Dead fridge?

Post by Cuppa »

We have a fairly ancient 240v/gas two way Dometic fridge inherited with our bus in the dim & distant past. For many years it has only worked on 240v, but has given stirling service in this condition, sitting on the veranda of our Gippsland home to keep eggs & a few cold drinks in.

I think it is the one single casualty of our move up to Ballarat but would like confirmation before chucking it out.

Now when we open the fridge door there is an immediate & overpowering smell of ammonia, & when plugged into power the pipework on the rear of the fridge gets hot, but the fridge fails to cool down inside. It has stood in an upright position for some time & this has made no difference.

Can anyone confirm death or otherwise?

Can't be positive about anything Cuppa but I think a lot of scrambled eggs with warm beer may be on the menu.
I wish both you & the fridge well but ................

The ammonia smell is a diagnostic certainty. It is no longer a fridge.

We had one in an old 1985 Viscount do the same thing.

The prognosis was it's dead, cost 75% of new one to repair.($1200)

Paid $200 to buy 240v only bar fridge and built it in.

Regards.
