Acquaintances of mine touring WA heading for Manjimup when they came across an injured dog (size of a horse) taking pity they attended to the dog, contacted the owner by the dog tag, who came to see the dog. The dog was big and only just fitted the passenger seat of the ute, so the young guy who came with the owner had to stay at the site. With a storm on the horizon and only 6km to town they offered to take the lad to town. They dropped him in town, reached for their iPad to find way to winery they were planning to visit, you guessed it was gone. The local police had no problems accepting their story and they got their iPad back within the hour.

Why was the dog in the passenger seat, and not on a blanket or somesuch in the tray? 
Surely the owner would have realised from your call that something like that was needed.
And he knew the size of the dog, of course.
Manjimup ain't big... maybe the rozzers had 'prior knowledge' of the family - or just the lad...
