Linux Mint help

I think there are a few members on here that use & recommend using Linux for their computer needs.
I wonder if one of these kind souls may help me get an application working?
Firstly be warned... I'm a nuB (see I've even got the geek talk down pat!)

OK, I'll briefly describe what I've done so far and at what stage I get stumped at.
Firstly I downloaded an ISO distro of LinuxMINT 14 (codename NADIA) from here (http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php) I got the 32bit MATE one.
I burnt the ISO to DVD.
I pulled my existing HD out & plugged in a spare blank 120gig HD.
I booted off the DVD & INSTALLED it to the HD.
I shut it down, took out the DVD, booted up off the new MINT HD & did all the recommended auto updates successfully.
Wired Internet works auto.
USB 3G Internet works OK.
Sounds works OK after installing a 'pack'.
Now I want to put a marine navigation package on it called OPENCPN.
The search couldn't find it so I went to the website download section (http://opencpn.org/ocpn/download) & got this version (Download OpenCPN 3.0.2 for 32 bit *Ubuntu 12.04) I didn't install from there but rather saved the .deb package.
After install I rebooted to get the executable in the programs list.
On clicking it begins to start (reading the navigation warning) & then nothing at all.
Starting it from a Terminal window I get the warning & then the error message.
I fail to understand this message which I failed to copy but suggests "insufficient resources" but a google brings up many posts that infer video drivers or openGL problem.
Anyone got suggestions?
I did say I was a newbie!!!
