I think so many of these (better) cheaper GPS's are around now a lot of people are avoiding the older (good) types/brands because of the restrictions they place on them. (no media player, no photo viewer, no external camera feed, etc plus charging for map updates!)
I think there are some free maps out there, I believe geoscience australia have some.

I paid $132 for a Tom Tom with free maps for 3 years.You don't need to be mathematician to figure out that that is far less per year than some of the dearer brands charge for the updates.
