I would reckon it'd be dearer than buying bread but if you're in an area where there is no fresh bread then it is your only option.
Recently when traveling 'up the creek' we found we either couldn't get fresh bread or had to buy frozen bread.
I'm sure some residents up the NorthWest coast of WA would be in a similar situation at the moment.
I'd reckon cooking your own would be quite a bit more expensive that buying it in a supermarket.
Maybe a small tuckerbox freezer on the back deck might be the go?
I sold my old Chescold freezer/fridge unit some years ago. I did 2 trips to Qld with it running as a freezer on gas. (direct from a cylinder)
Bread Maker?
Re: Bread Maker?
We only have bread fresh once a fortnite we freeze our bread.
Its bought at our local bakery, better than the supermarkets but dearer .
We mostly just use those square cracker things when traveling if bread isn't available for lunch.
Thanks Bruce I was just wondering the cost that's all.
Bernie.

Re: Bread Maker?
There are recipes around for bread making at home, I am sure some one like Kay might have an idea. Just saw Craig's post, which brand and mix Craig?

They usually make a small loaf with a bloody big hole in the bottom where the mixing paddle gets baked into the bread.
Look for one of those that fold the paddle down after mixing.
We have one but the navigator is not interested and insists its easier to make dough, prove it and cook it in the oven, which never gets done anyhow.
Sheeeeesh, I like hot fresh bread.

I do make bread by hand, they even bought me a book on bread making, but for now the pizza oven is packed away until new pergola/outdoor kitchen is build in new home.
The rewards are obvious, I make and bake, eat and get fatter.

Re: Bread Maker?
Hi Bruce ...Not only I am the Ironing Lady I am also the Breadmaking Lady......
At home I have a Panasonic had it for years and still going strong quite a large machine and it takes 4 hours to do a loaf of bread has heaps of setting and can be programed to turn on a certain time so you get up to the smell of freshly baked bread when you wake in the morning
In the caravan I have a Sunbeam Bakehouse a much smaller unit great for storing in the van, this also makes a great loaf and does most things like the Panasonic, the beauty of this one it only take about 3 to 3 1/2hrs to cook a loaf so better for power. We only use it when on power we make a couple of loaves if we are going bush for a couple of days.
I have experimented with heaps of different pre packed bread mixes and the one I found to be the best is called "Simply No Knead" it never seems to fail like some others.. I can get it from my local IGA but it is hard to find anywhere else you can order it on line but this adds to the cost, it works out about. $2.50 a loaf, and a loaf keeps for days. I make the Light Rye, comes in heaps of other style breads.
If we can't get this mix I use the Lauke (Spelling ?) brand. Found it to be OK.
To help with the big hole in the bottom use a little oil on the mixer/paddle thingy before you place your mix in.
Hope this helps you.
Cheers Ros.

Re: Bread Maker?
We use a cheap Breville Baker's Oven. Great bread maker, I use the Laucke Bread Mix which you can buy from Coles or Woolworths, you get 4 loaves per box, cost of box is $7.20. You can get White, Wholemeal, German Grain (black bread my wife reckons), Corn bread and a Rye. I make bread every 3 nights. Just making a Corn bread loaf. Only thing with the Breville is that you only put a teaspoon of Yeast in the mix otherwise the loaf ends up sticking to the top of the Oven.

Hi Dot, We use the Laucke brand. Only had a couple in the early days that weren't proved well but when you get your routine down pat and the car nice and warm in the sun (for proving) you get great loaves.
