Bed Lift Rams.

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

Bed Lift Rams.

Post by Kelvin12 »

Day All,

Has anyone gone into the bed lift using gas rams. Have a queen sized bed of average weight mattress plus underside timber framing. I am pretty sure I saw this idea on one of the forums, ???? some time ago now but can't find it now.

There is a mob who will make them up for you, but they ain't cheap if the bed is heavy because the ram diam needs to be quite large to stop bending when you lower the bed. In frustration I ended up changing to air rams and a 12v cheapie compressor so no matter what weight the bed was, the air rams would lift it. I bought them from someone was was getting rid of them on the old CMCA forum, they were ex bank safety shutter rams

We have a similar set up, Queen size inner spring mattress and a fairly substantial timber base, I used a couple of camper trailer lift rams, of eBay. Easy enough to lift and hold up well, need a bit of a tug to get them to come down but ok when you get used to them.

Here are mine, lifting double bed on steel frame and ply base. I have the calculations for size of rams needed somewhere.

Ebay "gas strut"

http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_trks ... &_from=R40

They are typically rated in N (Newton) which equates roughly to kg x 10, there are different lengths available for each rating

Downside - for higher pressure struts (higher N for same diameter) they WILL degrade over time and need replacing quicker or re-gassing. So go the longest stroke with the lowest N rating you calculate to work.
