Digitising Photo Slides

Hi
I guess a few of us would have slides hanging around
Has anyone converted their slides to a digital format ?
I am going to be selective in the ones I convert so won't be hundreds of them
I have been thinking of using the scanners that Harvey/Office Works sell for around $100
Has anyone done this and can offer a suggestion

I have done my slides - as well as almost every other photo right back to the brownie box camera. I used a flatbed scanner, albeit one that had proper slide holders and appropriate software. I don't think it matters what scanner you use as long as it has the software to do the job. Obviously a dedicated photo scanner will have it. The flatbed had the ability to scan from both mounted slides and slide negative strips. The software divided the slides into individual photos after scanning five at the one time. Sadly, some of the slides have deteriorated in quality with the passage of time.

Thanks for the reply Steve - I had a quick look at the flatbed scanners but I don't think you get too much change from 600 odd dollars.
I think I will go through the slides , pick the best and see how much the shops will charge and that will determine if I should buy a scanner or not
What system did you use to name the scanned photos
How did the box brownie get it's name ?

Eddy have you sussed out the ? photo places that do all these types of transfers?

No need to go for an expensive flat bed scanner. One of the cheaper Multi Function Printer, Copier. Scanners will do the job. Or one of the cheaper dedicated slide scanners. Expensive scanners are ok for high quality reproductions of high quality prints. Nothing will reproduce high quality from your slides - a cheap scanner will do as well as an expensive one. But you will get OK copies.

As for sorting, it's difficult but you have to make some decisions. Some I did by the year, e.g., Our Family 1970. Some I did by relating to events. It's hard and in some cases I have more than one copy, but in different folders. I did thousands of photos.

Don't chuck all them slides out Eddy.
I have a scanner that can do slides but at the moment I just don't have much spare time.
Once I catch up with a few jobs I'll get it all setup and post back on the forum.
The one I have turns on a light ABOVE the slide & then scans rather than a normal scanner that lights up from below.
Some time ago I did several hundred for the local museum.
A lot of the old slides had deteriorated badly and were not worth scanning.
I also converted a lot of VHS videos over to digital. (DVD)

Dot - There is a crowd in Perth who do them, have to give them a ring once I sort out a few things, I feel the advantages of doing them yourself is that you can categorise them at the same time

BruceS - Your a bit ahead of me in the conversions to digital, I have some silent super 8mm movie that have been sitting in the must do one day category !!!!!

I tried to have a 8mm movie of my 21st party done but the folk said to deteriorated to bother trying to do.
