Earlier this year I noticed that the left front tyre on the van (tandem) was wearing on the outside edge whilst the other 3 tyres were wearing - very slightly - on the insides.
Near the end of out 2nd jaunt over to WA - at Ceduna on the way back - I had the left front removed, the left rear moved to the left front & a new tyre on the rear bar moved to the left rear whilst the worn left front went onto replace the newby on the rear bar. Got all that?
By this time I was starting to think that it must be more than simply wheel bearings or correct tensioning. So, whilst sitting doin' nuttin in Orange, NSW, I noticed that the Orange City Mechnical workshop did truck alignment & a notice at the Info joint said the also did caravan alignment as well.
Popped over & had a chat with them... very helpful fellas there so booked in for the following Monday morning - the day we were leaving, so saved moving the van twice.
Delivered the van there at 0900 Monday, reversed it into the workshop, unhitched & left them to it... they said to come back around 1130 or so. Did that but it was obvious they were still working on it with their laser thingies or whatever it was so we went off for lunch. Returned at 1300/1pm & all fixed.
The main problem was that the left rear was pointing a bit to the left - hence the wear on the left front... being dragged across... at least that's what I understand them to have said.
Here's the report:
Wheel alignment set up. $115.00
W/A Axle 1.
L/H 1.5mm/m POS - no adjustment required.
R/H 0.6mm/m NEG - no adjustment required.
W/A Axle 2.
was 8.0mm/m NEG adjusted to 0.1mm/m POS on L/H &1.2mm/m POS adjusted to straight dead straight 0.0.
Consumables $22
Labour 2.5 hours $275
Total $453.20 (incl GST 10%)
Will now get all the tyres reversed on the rims & hopefully have even wear all around.

Re: Tyre wear on the van & rectification...
Chuck,
Wow, 8 mm is quiet a lot of toe. I wonder if you'll notice any fuel savings and handling differences.
Just be aware that once a tyre develops a wear pattern, it's almost impossible to stop it.
So, don't be to worried if they keep on wearing the same way.
I note you're rotating on the rim which is different to swapping from side to side.
Just for the unwary, radials don't like being swapped from left to right because they rotate opposite. They develop a bias in the wires and reversing them upsets them. Hence, why rotating on the rim is best. The roll in the same direction, but the inside is now outside and on the opposite side!

Re: Tyre wear on the van & rectification...
G'day Jon,
Prior to having the job done & the explanation of what the problem was, I would not have an iota of knowledge whether the 8mm was good, bad or indifferent.
Tom, the mechanic, explained in words of one syllable that I could understand, indicating that the left rear was what was causing the left front's problem. He also suggested the tyre rotation on the rims & that the fuel consumption should improve!
About to organise that.

Hi Chuck,
Toe in/Toe out is like being pigeon toed. The quick way to check on a twin axle is to put a straight edge across the centre outsides of the tyres. The edge should touch each side wall at the same time.
Of course, you need to consider loads on tyres and air pressure as this could balloon one out. That's why they put the jig on the rims.
