Our rear engine doesnt seem to transmit a lot of heat. There is the engine hatch, an air space then the bed. We have a layer of bubble foil insulation on the engine side of the hatch, and another layer in the air space above, plus their is carpet. The bottom of the engine bay is open to the ground.

The Ceramic wool blanket must be available over here some where Dottie, I think it was Dirk that gave me the remains of his box full when he finished his insulation job, that's where I got the name from, off the box

Ebay Dottie, marvelous place. It was actually pizza oven insulation. Can't remember the price now but it was comparable price wise to the sound deadener/heat insulation that Clark Rubber and Whitworths sell. I used it to insulate the oven and hot plates away from each other and wound up insulating the sides of the oven box as well. Heavy stuff but easy to work with. Its just a thick blanket type of stuff about 30 odd mm's.

The trouble is, the engine is a block of iron. It's going to radiate the heat until it cools down.

The options are:

Cool the engine down quicker.
Build a thermal barrier to stop the heat radiating into the bedroom.

I think a good option might be to use passive cooling where there is an air tunnel (a long flat hollow box) which would flow the hot air out and draw the cooler air in. The box would be mounted under the the floor.


btw, once the heat has warmed things up, it's near impossible to cool it down with out using lots of energy.

Most times we stay were we have stopped for lunch.
We don't have your problem Dot 'no rear engine' but its a long time from lunch to beddie bye's time to cool more.
I know that wont help when your on a mission.

Last time I made a comment about our Dot being 'on heat' I almost got a letter, so I won't make a comment about the present situation. After all--I am a guest at Dot's [Van Park] the moment. I will venture to state that the facilities are first class.

I only need a bitch for "Russell" to play with to keep him contented, although he is happy with the attention and the 'tit-bits' he is receiving from Dot.
CLARIFICATION: tit-bits are kangaroo snacks ! ----- I almost qualified for a letter with that statement.

Professional means it was paid for, not that it was done by someone who knew what they were doing. Check the back wall of the bus after the next trip or if you can remember from the last trip, was there more dirt on the back than the sides? If yes, this indicates there is a vortex generated behind the bus and hot air from under the bus is being sucked up behind the bus, that hot air would go back into the engine compartment, not hot air escaping through that vent.
you could fit a narrow door the same shape as that vent that you open when you pull up for the night to vent the hot air out, but you would need a big air scoops and fan assist on the side vents to get the air to come out through that vent while travelling.
A double ended barrel fan like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Car-Auto-Veh ... 27e8727205 but a trip to the wreckers will find a better unit, or a bilge blowers like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/In-Line-Blow ... 2c8c4cb10e venting out the side just where it starts to curve around the back with the outlet facing backwards would move a lot of the hot air out of that area above the engine, one each side would do the job fine.

Or a wind deflector up top on the roof to send the air down the back end. You see a lot of that style deflector on the NASCAR transporters and Yank M/H's. Thinking the same for mine to keep the jake brake crap off if nothing else. Not sure if the stack is going to keep it directed away or not. Probably not for the same reasons Terry explained.
