External Speakers for TV.

Post by Chuck »

Two reasons.

The crappy sound from today's flat screen HD LED TV's is, frankly, very tinny & bloody awful, &...

Ours is situated in the LH front corner of the van between the door & the front window... &, of course, when it is rather warm like the last few days the door & window are both open. Fortunately we are parked at home, for the silly season, otherwise the TV noise would surely be annoying the hell out of any possible neighbourly vans or MH's.

Had a look at the back of our TECO 19" HD model & it has an input for headphones, so is there a foolproof method for selecting the best speakers - hopefully with about 4-5m of cable to allow them to be placed far enough away from the the above location... & where from? JB HiFi... Hardly Normal... Richard Smythe... Little Wubbleyou???

Each & all suggestions welcome - be they on topic or otherwise... go for it!

Chuck I don't think the headphone output will run external speakers of any size without an amp

Chuck I had 2 'gadgets' in my Civilian that drove me mad because I've been told I have 'bad hearing' and had to continually ask "what did they say" !!
Well there was 3 ......... the 2 way radio as well but I simply plugged an extension speaker in that & mounted it up near my ear as we used to do in trucks years ago. I just used a 1/8" plug & joined it onto one speaker that originally belonged to those twin speakers off a computer.

The other two items needed an Amp & then a speaker.
A 15" LCD TV & the little GPS street navigator ........
It get's a little messy with all these gadgets but like someone said... "he who dies with the most gadgets is the richest"...
This is the terrific little gadget I used.

You can hook up stereo speakers to it or just one if you don't care much for top quality sound.
I had an old set of computer speakers here so just chopped the wires & used one speaker for each job.
I can now her my 'friend' tell me directions to take & I don't need to deafen the neighbours when listening to TV from up the other end of the bus.

Chuck, another option would be the plug-in external type computer speakers that have a built in amp, you could even have a powered sub as well :) That would work in an earphone jack

Some quality speakers here.
Top brand with good sound.
If using with the above Amp you bypass the builtin tuner (240v) in the one side speaker.

Is it possible doable to use speakers from a little stereo unit?? Why would the sound be shitty from a reasonably new tv anyway?? Chuck you should have looked at Hamo's caravan.. :D

Dot the quality of sound is mostly to do with the size of the speakers.
Because they try to make these new TV's so darn thin they end up having to squeeze the speakers in.
In my 15" LCD TV the two speakers are only about an inch across & are in fact pointing BACKWARDS.........
To get the really best sound go look around your local op shop or trash & treasure market & look for an old His Masters Voice radiogram !! Speakers are about 10" across.
I usually look at the speakers before I use them... 8ohm seems the accepted ones, especially for 2 way radios.
Space is usually the deciding factor in a MH or caravan.

If your vehicle stereo has a good sound and an aux input jack, a cable with plugs from J Car etc that fits the earphone TV socket and the input to the stereo will do the job nicely.
We play the laptops Windows music thingy via the earphone socket to the house stereo input when we want music these days, a good songlist and random play, lasts for hrs and a big display of the song list, the computers speakers are dreadful.
