Bernie, I sent you a copy of the engine workshop manual today.
I also have a book which lists all the Isuzu 6BG1 engine part numbers if you need a part number.
Good luck.... don't forget to re-torque the head after running for 30 minutes and then again after about 1000k's.

Re: Bernie and Carols Isuzu fit out.
Thanks Jon, will be in the big smoke tomorrow hopefully to pick up new parts plus taking head to reco man.
Still this chrome bore thing has me worried. The parts place has told me that there is only one set of rings listed in all the catalogues?
Time will tell.
Bernie.

Might have to see if you can borrow a hone Bernie?
How much gap in the rings when inserted in the cylinder?

Re: Bernie and Carols Isuzu fit out.
Can't hone chrome cyls and you can only use cast iron rings as chrome rings in a chrome bore seize and tear things to shreds. I hate working with chrome bores, so hard to bed the rings in without scuffing them or them rolling their edges off and not sealing at all. The Motoguzzi engines we bored and iron sleeved the cyls and this cured the problem.
Good luck with it Bernie, no friction modified oils or oil additives, straight virgin stock mineral based oil like Penrite HPR Diesel.

Re: Bernie and Carols Isuzu fit out.
Hi all another update. I took the head into Maryborough today for reconditioning , bad news looks like the engine had ingested dust at some stage. All the valves and guides are being replaced . The repair man thinks that most of my problem of oil use was from the head its self . Have picked up the new rings and bearings genuine Isuzu. From speaking to the people there plus people from Isuzu they seem to think that the bores are not chrome, as the last rebuild was from a full kit it would be highly unlikely to be chrome bores with the rings that were in it. By the way the old rings are also Isuzu as per their stamp on them.
As there is no lip on any of the bores or scrape marks they are of the opinion that with a light hone all should be good in that department.
More as it happens.
Bernie.
And thanks Terry.

Geez Bernie, that's no good.... maybe, better get some new air cleaners and give the inlet pipe a good clean out. And check for any cracks or leaks?

Re: Bernie and Carols Isuzu fit out.
If the bore is that glazed it looks chrome plating then the rings would not have bedded in and may possibly have been damaged because of it. If you can borrow a bead hone they do the best job by far. First cut use kero, final cut use auto trans fluid, then scrub the bores with a nail brush and warm soapy water. test with a white cotton rag soaked in auto trans fluid, any signs of grey, scrub the bore again and retest. The auto trans fluid will provide a good anti rust coating as a rust film will develop in mins without it. Not that unusual to have no lip in the bore of a diesel engine, especially one that has had a taste for oil. check the clearance of the top ring in the piston groove, the most common wear point if dust has been entering the combustion chambers.BernieQ wrote:Hi all another update. The rings were near v shaped in the Mazda so the engine must have swallowed a lot of dust in its life, but virtually no upper cyl wear. replaced the liners anyway because a few had seizure marks from the lack of oil supplied by the cyl oil squirters

Re: Bernie and Carols Isuzu fit out.
Todays effort, I have cleaned the air intake and exhaust manifolds. And I removed all the intake pipe from the air cleaner to engine. Prick of a job.
They are stuffed with dirt and rust, its in three pieces and almost 5 foot in length .Goes from the engine to the front of bus behind the grill . Starting to think that it was driven thru the last floods at Gayndah ??
I have all the pipes in the local engineering work shop to have new fabricated. I should pick up my reconed head tomorrow arvo.
That's about it for today, have to work around visitors on and off. But that's not a bad thing helps with the frustration .

Been a busy boy Bernie! If a lot of oil has been going through the motor I wonder if the muffler is choked too?
