Thanks Jim,, your instructions are good, but seems what I've done is pretty close to what you propose and accordingly, the finder should at least signal when near a sat. I'm near Nubeena and it's pretty hilly, surely the sat finder would at least be able to scroll through and check each item on the menu. But it does nothing at all, just says search for sat and when I hit ok, nothing. When I try to check out the other aspects of the menu nothing happens at all, unless this is normal, which I doubt, then my sat finder may be buggered and could be why the unit was sold. Probably connected the finder backwards and may have stuffed it.

Re: Digital tv signal meters
If you are not getting any signal then it is more likely that you have a bad connection. Check all your f connectors. You do not need to spend big dollars on the fancy sat finders, in my opinion they are a waste of money. It is important that you set the dish up using a level, if this is done correctly and the angle of the dish is also correct then you simply swing the dish across the horizon. Make sure the LNB angle is correct. I use a simple sat finder meter and in the last 6 years on 2 occasions I have resorted to swinging the dish slowly in an up and down motion whilst moving it a small amount to the side at the end of the end of the top or bottom motion. Also keep in mind that it can take up to around 30 minutes for a picture to appear after you have found the satellite if you haven't used it for a while.
But as I said earlier, if you aren't getting any signal then check your connections.

I use an app on my mobile - called Satfinder. Just turn the app on, hold the phone vertical and it will point to the satellite as well as give coordinates. We have an auto gizmo but its value to us is to make sure we haven't parked so that a tree is between us and the satellite. A line on the phone screen shows where the satellite is.

Re: Digital tv signal meters
My current signal meter is very sensitive and locates easily enough but you don't quite know which one its locked onto. Seems to find quite a few at times. I liked the idea of the finder in the link where it locks onto the selected one only. Would be good if it could be left connected all the time as well.

I have one of those Steve best thing since the invention of beer. Also called the marriage saver??
The best thing about them is that you see the tv channels in the palm of your hand, when you can see them its all good to go.
I can attach mine at the rear of Motor home with short cable when cannels appear just plug the wire back into its joiner.
I bought mine after neighbour came down with his and bingo all done in seconds .
Bernie.

Yep bought one, but hasn't arrived yet, living at the bottom of the planet, means slow mail, should be here tomorrow and will let you know how it works.Kelvin12 wrote:G'Day Native Pepper,

Re: Digital tv signal meters
Got my sat finder Tuesday, tried it today and got nothing, all it says is “no program”. Used the scan function and still nothing, moving the dish makes no difference. Found it really hard to read in full sun, so waited until the suns going down and have just tried it again. Used the scan for all sats and still nothing, beginning to think got ripped off. Also taking into account where we live and that there are trees in the direction of the sat, so may have to prune them a bit with the earth mover.
It may be a faulty LNB, or just my ignorance of vast and the equipment. Will have to head to Dunalley and see if any of the campers there have vast, try mine out near them and get some advice. Not having ever used one of these or been around anyone that has one, got no idea and even thought of taking it on the roof to see how it goes. Seen lots of them on the road, but never talked about it with others.
Looking at getting one of these just in case and as a spare. Probably end up getting a full set of spares by the time I get it to work.

Re: Digital tv signal meters
When I got my set up it was the ground tripod version. Set it up at home in the backyard, took ages to get anything on the TV screen. Tried and tried over and over again. Still bugger all. Finally tracked it down to a crook cable, LNB to the finder. Got a new cable and away it went. If you pass your hand between the LNB and dish you should get a variation in signal, visually and sound wise on the finder. Swap the cables around use one at a time rather than both at once. Any foliage nearby whatsoever seems to upset the thing even if its not in a direct line of sight. Also try re-booting (resetting) on the decoder several times. Its a slow process sometimes and it does slowly work. If all else fails give Vast a call and see what they reckon.
Keep us up to date, might help someone else out.
Dirk
P.S. I wound up ordering the satellite finder, the one Bruce mentioned.

Re: Digital tv signal meters
If you are still having problems getting your VAST working we can probably help once we get the info we need.
Firstly can you give us your exact location so we can tell you where the satellite is located.
