I agree with Dirk but I must stress that your aim has to be almost exact.
Once you get the rough idea of where the satellite is, you need to SLOWLY turn the dish back & forth in that direction. (around 15-20 degrees if you're unsure of where North is) Rob suggests you should be pointing it at 2 degrees to the left of directly North. 358 degrees.
Once you get SOME signal you can try tilting the dish slightly up & down & then left & right, then up & down, left & right till you either see the highest QUALITY on your meter or hear the very highest sounding pitch.
Once you have reception just leave it EXACTLY there & watch the set top box boot up & find the bouquets (channels)
If you have activated your card as a "traveller" you may need to wait anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours for you to see the rest of the channels.
If still no reception of extra commercial channels you'll need to either ring them (like Bernie had to) or just duck in to the website & do it again.

Before you start sat hunting, set your skew. Make sure you are vertical. Set your angle. Then start the sideways to and fro. If you cannot get something in 10 mins then either your sertings or your gear are crook
Hills wont stop the signal. The satellite is high. Trees may

Don't rely on a compass inside your vehicle. Metal creates an incorrect reading. Finding the correct satellite is a "needle in the haystack" literally. You can fiddle around for ages trying to find the bloody thing, two are really close together. As Bruce says sometimes it takes a while for the system to get its bum into gear.

You don't need a smart phone for an ap, if you have a iPad or tablet you can get the ap. It really is the best option. You don't need to look through a pipe  , the ap has a function where you can use the camera of the phone or tablet and by pointing it at the sky it will show you exactly where the satellite is. It superimposes a shape of the satellite where the satellite is in the sky. If there are trees or something between you and the satellite you will see clearly that you have to move.
It can be very frustrating when you are not getting any indication of a signal and if that is the case I would suggest you check the condition of all the connections and also the skew as has been suggested. You can find the satellite without the skew set correctly but you will need to then set the skew to get a picture.
Each step of the set up is important to aid in an easy and quick satellite find. Make sure you set the tripod up level, use a spirit level. This is important as when you set the angle of the dish you simply swing the dish from left to right or right to left until you are on the satellite.

Craig I really do believe you, but like me, I think there's a lot of us don't own iPads, iPhones or any other "smart" thing except maybe our partners!!!
I have a toshiba laptop & a 'dumb' phone. In fact I've disable even being able to receive a photo from anyone else to my phone after a $60 bill-shock some time ago.
I'll make do with my 'tools' for now!

Steve the truthful answer to that question is ....
Yes we have Grandchildren and after an eventful trial period with a Samsung Smart Phone they are now the owners of it!!!
I spent quite a few years keeping up with technology and helping half the population of Kingston buy, setup & use computers and laptops and now wish to just enjoy life without it's brain busting technology.....

Me. First work computer - Wang word processor and data base - about 1983. First home computer: Apple IIc - about 1985?

I used to be able to do stuff with them but they quickly became too complicated and so I resigned myself to being a run of the mill user.

I think I am heading towards the peaceful life like yourself, Bruce.

My first computer was an ICL 10 04, about 1964 was about the size of a small bedroom & had to be in a temp., controlled room, fed with punched cards, they have certainly like everything else improved over the years, use to do the accounts for AEI for all states of Australia.

Given that you can buy a Nokia smartphone for under $20 and wikicamps is $5, I would have thought it be a cheaper and easier item to use compared to the expensive sat finder.
