Morning All,
Does anyone have up to date ideas of what needs to be stamped on a new tow bar and hitch these days. Sick of waiting for the engineer to get back to me as time is running out before we hit the road. The ADR rule is ADR62/- but reading endless pages on the net aren't helping to enlighten me. Seems there as so many amendments and updates but nothing to actually say you need ....... and ........ Also seems each state has its own variation. So much for being one country.

Re: Tow Bar Stampings
I'd suggest you just look at another "genuine" towbar & create your own plate to pop rivet onto it.
Do you have a set of stamp punches?
I'm up the creek at the moment so can't look at the one on the Civilian.
Best to see what is on a towbar on a bigger vehicle rather than a Commodore !!
What would you need? 4500kg? (gross on trailer)

Re: Tow Bar Stampings
I got mine made by a body builder in WA as the old one wasn't suited for our needs.
our plate is ally and riveted to the bar and on it is stamped
made by (company name)
Model ie DT70
Rated 4500 KG
Down load 450KG
Unable to get a decent pic of it as its half hidden behind the rear bumper
hopefully this is helpful

Re: Tow Bar Stampings
Thanks Jamie thought it must be something along those lines. Couldn't Dotty bend over that low the poor old bird...... Every time you talk to the engineers they are like solicitors and charge like they do.
G'Day Bruce, Seems the heavier the tow bar the more details needed from what I am gathering. I am going to A bar tow the Prado and that's 1700kg tare and 2700 agg. Not that you would need to load the toad up that much. Also looks like it got to be welded on if its a metal tag or stamped into the bar. No mention of pop rivets so far but who knows the way all the crap is on this thing. Of course the bureaucrats couldn't make it easy of course. Why make it simple when you can make it completely difficult so no one can find out what they need.

Re: Tow Bar Stampings
Might be different now but I've NEVER ever seen either the police or the scalies look at a tag on a towbar.
Of course if the 'trailer' broke loose and killed someone ....... ?
But then a meteor might hit me on the big toe tomorrow too ....

Re: Tow Bar Stampings
Me to. Never seen anyone check the numbers ever. When I bought the Prado the salesman just handed me a tow bar neck and said its yours. Its numbered but doesn't relate to my vehicle. Even the holes needed re-drilling for the pin so it really belongs to another vehicle, somewhere.
Its just this time its a new rego not a re-rego with a new tow bar so its going to checked and the paper work needs to be right.

Re: Tow Bar Stampings
G'Day All,
This is a bit like following the LPG rules, bloody hard to fathom or find.... Engineer got back to me and states the followings stampings need to be on the tow bar, A frame and toad hitch. The following is for NSW and are different in other states.
TOW BAR
Name of fabricator, company or you name if self made...
Brand of vehicle its fitted to...
Towing capacity...
Vertical load...
A FRAME.
Similar to the above but with no vertical load.
TOAD HITCH.
Name of fabricator company or your name if self made...
Brand of vehicle its attached to...
Tow capacity...
Details can be stamped onto a plate then riveted onto the various components or stamped into the metal or engraved but must be clearly visible with lettering / numbers larger than 2.5mm
Would have thought VIN's would have been required but apparently not these days.
Hope this might help someone else trying to get a handle on this stuff as its pretty vague trying to find out.
