Can anyone give me an idea of the distance between the reasonably priced fuel stops at each end of the Nullabor ? I have heard it is way expensive if you have to buy in the middle
Thanks
William

Purchase a twenty litre jug because you will find price variance that defies explanation, however, with a spare you have no care.Busman wrote:Can anyone give me an idea of the distance between the reasonably priced fuel stops...
Do NOT shop at the Nullabor Roadhouse in SA just before the WA Border because of the Whale Size Price and they charge for bore water. Keep traveling with your 20l jug if you see the Whale and be smug. Price on pump was May 2014.

Max diesel price recently 1.82. My small tank 70l I fill up twice a day so cost of fuel amortized over multiple stops. There is a fuel stop approx every 200kms. Average fuel cost over 4700 Kim's is 1.46.

Have you got the petrolspy app, Willem?
Highly recommended (there are other ones similar)
You can research distances and prices by map

Re: Range required to cross the nulla
William is running a GM in a big bus towing a vehicle, 20 ltrs wouldn't even get the beast to top gear again
Someone suggested yrs back that you could not cross the Nullarbor in a fully loaded truck into the wind if you were running a GM without stopping for fuel. The weight of the extra fuel required pushed the ltr/km up higher so it was an unachievable goal
Friends with an 8V92TA towing a big trailer with a very big belly tank saw fuel economy of 1.2ltrs/km on the trip across as top gear was only possible for a few kms before the temp climbed forcing him to drop back a gear, so the weight v economy was made worse due to cooling issues. On paper he had more than enough fuel to do the trip to Perth and beyond without needing to buy fuel at all, he had to buy fuel at the inflated prices before he reached the WA border. Don't drive in the heat of the day and park up if there is a head wind were the golden rules the old truckies used back before the high tech diesel engines came on the market.

Re: Range required to cross the nulla
Ok thanks all, I did not realise there were roadhouses every couple of hundred klicks, so basically if you run out you are a silly bugger.
I think our tank is between 6 and 700 litres and we generally get around 3 klicks to the litre so should be no problems
Will do a couple of big days to drop down into SA then take it a bit easier, should be able to rest if the wind is in the wrong direction
Thanks
William
