Greynomad & SWMBO on tour

Post by Greynomad »

A friend has come up from Melbourne for a 5-week holiday/house-sit... with his 2 Staffies & a Ridgeback-And pup to join our Terrible Twosome (Lab & Beagle).
So we've been off touring in GIRT, with Jim the Junior Jeep in tow. (As per the avatar)
First stop was Beltana Station, 30km south of Leigh Creek in SA for a week.
460,000 acres! That's about 1800+ square Kilometres... bigger than some European nations! It stretches as far as Lake Torrens, just east of Woomera. It was featured in The Wanderer, July 2014.
Had a great time taking Jim through his paces on the bush tracks on the station. A 50km work-up, followed by the 60km loop, then the biggie: 110km to Lake Torrens & back. Average speed on tracks: 15~20km/h.
The 60km and 110km loops included some rather large and soft red-sand dunes to negotiate. Tyres down to 20PSI. Could have gone lower, but there were gibber stretches to negotiate as well, and I didn't want to spend half the day taking tyres up-down-up-down. Twenty was a good compromise which worked.
See this month's photo comp (Photo #8) for an idea of the challenges.
Our 4WD training course was worth the money!
We left Beltana last Sunday (18th Oct) & headed South, stopping at Murray Town's low-cost campground ($7/pvpn unpowered)... a great place for a coupla days if you're in the area. Powered sites available if you insist; $15 I think... not really interested, so didn't take particular note.
We're now in Stanford on the Eyre Peninsula. Had our taste of 35deg+ dry-as-dust; time for the beachfront experience - which we have: absolute beachfront in the CP here.
Manager knows her stuff. Asked her for a drive-through site, as we are 13m long with Jim in tow. She gave us a double-site fore-and-aft, saying things are quiet at the moment, and she's unlikely to need the second (free) site. Senior's Discount, too!
We now have the luxury of shore power & water, and a sullage outlet... so we don't have to watch our shower-time! ;) Or our grey-water tank level. There's a well-equipped (new stuff!) camp kitchen/BBQ/dining room, clean & new ablutions/laundry block... all good stuff & worth the $25.20/pn. SOME CP owners/managers are coming to the party!
We'll luxuriate for a coupla daze then move on... who-noze-where? :P
Not due back in Rutherglen until Cup Day... or thereabouts.
Seeya OTR maybe... give GIRT a wave.
Regards & God bless,
Ray

Ray is OTR on the River"?
Sounds like you're really looking our state over and enjoying it.
We have a chap in Kingston who owns several properties including one way up on the Eastern side of the Flinders Ranges.
He invited me to enjoy it any time I liked IF I had a 4WD. (which I don't)
I've often thought it may be a good place for a get together in the cooler months of the year?

Hi Ray
I was born and bred on Eyre Peninsula and had never heard of Stanford, so googled it and still didn't find out where it is.
