Keep in mind that huge numbers of Grey Nomads live in retirement villages for the very reason that they can shut the door and go away in their caravans, motorhomes, etc., and not have to worry for a minute about the garden, the letters, etc. They can come home when they like and their home will be as good as when they left it.

Also, residents do benefit from the gain in capital value of their retirement property. Sure, the village owner retains a percentage but it's usually the beneficiaries of the will who complain that their parents "wasted" some money.

Spend it like it's your own money.

So many older folk seem to forget that it really is their money. The days of the kids leaving school and working the farm or business for very little pay are gone, so I can't understand the belief that kids these days are owed a inheritance. Spend it like you worked all your life to earn the right to do so because they won't, it will be gone in no time and they will be back to getting by on their own income. Let's face it, if they haven't figured out how to do that while you were alive there is no chance they will figure it out just because you gave them yet another hand out when you die

Just to give a little balance to this thread, this is our home at RV Homebase.

The 16m x 6m, 3.6m door height garage houses our van, Landcruiser and second car ( currently on the driveway as we just got home from a week away and haven't unhitched the van yet) with space to spare. No entry or exit fees, stamp duty etc. Not all "villages" are created equal. We love being able to lock up and leave for months at a time without having to worry about home.

Not for everyone of course, but we love it.

Looks great with the garden and lawns now established, pity it's so hot up there..... he says after spending a week in Mannum at 45*C+ and dead grass everywhere  I think if the garage door height had been 4mtrs plus we just might have moved up that way instead of SA as both were thought of as part of our retirement plan. But the Man Cave in Mannum won out on size and price.... now to see if it will be a land based boat house as Margaret has named it or a house boat... as in one of those huge ex rental things. Margaret started looking at house boats after the trip up river with Bruce and Wendy on their houseboat to watch the fireworks New Yrs eve. Yet another option for a retirement home and I can understand why Bruce and Wendy chose the houseboat option, it is incredibly peaceful and relaxing putting along the river, even more so at night.
How'd I go getting this thread back on topic

Lesley, the RV retirement villages are very different to the ordinary villages, the homes appear to have more space, further apart & it is great that you have the garage big enough to store all your vehicles, your situation looks great but still not for us.

Terry, if you waved enough $$$$s in front of them, I'm sure you could have had what you needed.

Shirley, I agree this is not for everyone but just wanted to put an alternate view out there. BTW, our block is 516m2, not much smaller than our house block in Brisbane and, yes, we do get a pro rata rent assistance for our site fee. We use this place to our advantage and don't feel like we are hemmed in.
