Re: Trivia quiz.
Would I be right in thinking that in that small town there is a commemorative plaque that notes all this info?
Cheers

Re: Trivia quiz.
Probably not, I think the town itself has just about died as the purpose for the town no longer exists.... that is sort of a hintsupersparky wrote:Would I be right in thinking that in that small town there is a commemorative plaque that notes all this info?
A person may fail many times, they only become a failure when they blame someone else John Burrows

Re: Trivia quiz.
According to wikipedia they reached Penns Reach. About 28 miles. Stopped by shallow water. That part I remembered from the Swan Hill Pioneer Village and the story of the Gem.
If you hadn't moved to Mannum, nobody would know that.

Re: Trivia quiz.
It was further than 28 miles but it was sand bars that stopped them. Where is Penns Reach, Google maps doesn't seem to know it either.

Re: Trivia quiz.
According to Wikipedia it disappeared as a location when it become superfluous. That is the price of progress isn't it. Maybe have a look at the old parish maps Terry, they will be on a wall in a hall or office somewhere.

Re: Trivia quiz.
OK, here's the answer as far as I could gather anyway http://www.murrayriver.com.au/about-the ... esteamers/ The 125 miles is very close to a small town call Overland Corner as this was the last spot close to the main road so the load could be moved from one end of the shallows to the next nearest deeper water, probably Renmark but I didn't dig far enough to find that out for sure. The next attempt they made it as far as Moama and later the port of Echuca was established. It wasn't till the locks and weirs were built that the Murray became navigable properly.

Re: Trivia quiz.
It just goes to show that you can't always believe what Wikipedia claims as fact. Your version is much more interesting and probably more historically correct.
Now to think of an interesting question. Watch this space.
