Mercedes OH 1418

Post by Kappy »

I've owned my rig since mid March, however I have discovered a general lack of information regarding older buses.

All I know is I have a 1991 Mercedes OH1418 with a Volgren aluminium body.

Even contact with with Mercedes Aust hasn't revealed a whole, I got more info from Volgren in that the frame and panel are all tensile Aluminium.
.
I know the 14 18 stands for 14 tonne and 180 hp ( turbo diesel)

The rig has a slow diff with a top speed of 91km/h, (GPS) and drives well at that speed, even pulls OK up hills, I get the not in a hurry anyway.

So I was hoping for some guidance on what type and quantities of oils to use and any other info that members may be able to provide. or point me in the general direction.

I don't even know the size of the engine (litres) only that it is a straight 6 cylinder turbo diesel.

Cheers

Pretty sure it's the same motor that was in the 1418 truck.
Think it was the OM352 engine.
Apparently in Germany it was released with a turbo & in some cases, also an intercooler.
It was decided it was too hot to include those 'add-ons' for the Australian market.
Mine used to always run hot on a very hot day.... there was nothing I could do to cool it down.
The motors are a VERY low tolerance motor and you can bet your bottom dollar that if you get it just a few degrees over temperature that it will nip a piston. Let it cool down & away you go but from then on it will use 4-5 litres of oil for every 500miles.
Brilliant low rev torque though.......... wait till your revs drop right down before changing down. Most times it'll drop to 1300 & just grunt & hang on...........
Can you read the engine number on the block?
Does it have the high beam switch on the stalk just under the steering wheel? Common failure..... I changed mine to foot operated switch like in the 50's.

Thanks Bruse,

Not sure if it the same engine I picked her up on a 38C day and drove through hills of Dwelling up area and the temp seemed OK around 80 to 90 C tops.

I've done about 500k in her and the oil level hasn't changed ,just wanted to change it before I head to Hedland in June.

The engine number is 37695260050810, I recall and earlier comment about separate heads for each cylinder, this engine has a normal head.

The high beam is on the indicator stalk.

OK, different motor then. I thought the year was just after those other models stopped. About 1977 or so I think then they went to the V engines.
Load may not effect it in a bus anyway..... I was pulling a tri.... loaded up most times too.
Did you ask on the Aus Bus forum?
Are you positive it's one head? One tappet cover... yes but separate heads?
The 1419 model truck had a single head though.. also went 2km/hr faster & I could never catch him. Slimline cab though so I slept more comfy!

Couldn't be the old 1418 engine Bruce as Kappy mentioned that it meant 14 tonne and 180hp..... the older motor it meant 14km/h up hill and 18km/h down the other side  The deluxe early model had a clock where a normal truck had the speedo, the standard model had a tear off page calendar ;)
