Holding your grey water
We like to try to do the right thing, and have when free camping refrained from dropping grey water at random. Of course, the retention causes issues on the nose. What have others done to deal with this? We try not to hold for longer than 24 hrs now and usually just hold the grey for a day prior to dumping the black water.

Re: Holding your grey water
We try to empty the grey every day or 2 at the most, we use no bad chemicals and after every empty we put a bit of bleach down the sinks this we find helps the delay of any pongs..

Re: Holding your grey water
The active enzyme drain cleaner in the purple bottle sold at Bunnings and the like does an excellent job of stopping the grey water pong and stopping it becoming a biological hazard as well. Just like the sodium percarbonate in the black tank, it does its job without leaving any harmful residue behind.

Re: Holding your grey water
Have been in a few caravan parks now and all just tell you to dump the grey on the ground. Haven't come across one that has insisted grey into the tanks. We only put a minuscule amount of kitchen water down into the tank as the plates etc are wiped over with paper towels then things washed in a plastic tub which then goes out onto the ground. Shower water we let go on the ground. Since doing it like this there is no smell from the grey tank. We don't dump grey in the free camp areas though.
Still see the odd motor home dribbling water when underway though. .....

Re: Holding your grey water
We carry 380lt of fresh water, 80 grey and 80 black, along with a 24v desalinator various filters and pumps for filling up where we need to. The grey water feeds the toilet and filtered for solids before going into the grey tank and through a macerator before being dumped. We don't seem to have the smells others seem to get from the grey water, which I put down to diet, but after a week the black water tends to emit some unpleasant odours and for us, that's the time to look for a dump spot.
Can't remember the last time we stayed in a van park, occasionally stay at places that have facilities and don't charge the earth for cramped noisy smelly living conditions.

Re: Holding your grey water
When I saw the header for this post, I thought "We just cross our legs."
However, it's a serious prob... we have the same one with the pong.
We use Tank Kleen before & after trips, but OTR it's a smelly task.
Thanks for the tip, T1. We'll look it up next shopping trip.

Re: Holding your grey water
I have seen comments for ages about issues with grey water, so put my mind into gear to try to make mine as problem free as possible.
Don't know if it works yet, as the MH has not come out of the shed, but I installed a small irrigation sprinkler in the top centre of grey and black tanks, connected to a hose fitting for connection to water.
Also in the line to the sprinklers is an irrigation liquid fertilizer venturi, fed from a 10 litre tank via a solenoid valve, so the theory is that after a flush with water, some kind of liquid (still to work out what) can be sprayed into the tank to clean, and then rinse with water.
Water is pumped out with a mascerator pump.

Re: Holding your grey water
IF you clean your tank then you have to start the bacteria up again.
In black water I have heard of using yogurt but I just empty out all that will come out and then put the canister back in and it still has bacteria to start the reaction straight away.
If you kill the bacteria then there is nothing to work on your by product and therefore it will stink.
