Silent wind generator

Post by RussellB[SA] »

Just read iMotorhome and the article on silent wind generators, mmm very interesting.

http://www.silentwind.com.au

Now the jokes about chuckie start I guess.

One of the complaints about wind generators is the noise factor but this mob reckons their's is silent!! ($2000 they orta be)

Any real experience out there with these units (apart from "my cousin parked next to a noisy bugga once") ;)

This bit says a lot
Why Silentwind? Because it is whisper quiet compared to other small wind generators
then their "facts" about solar panels leave a heap to be desired. The truth is, wind turbines vibrate, so strapping one to a motorhome will create a drum effect both inside and out. they need a large obstacle free path for the wind to clear all it's eddie currents and flow smooth and strong, that's well clear of trees, buildings and any other vehicle, their advertising photo shows it parked near a boat ramp or similar so a large open area to supply steady smooth wind. Only solar panels produce silent power, even then fan assisted solar regulators can become irritatingly noisy. Even if there was a way to make the blades being driven by the wind silent, the alternator would still make a whining noise, maybe it's Dottie whisper quiet ;)

This section is not for "wind" jokes Russell so we won't.  We were once parked next to a small MH with a little wind generator. The name of it was a SBD. . It was a very quiet and the owner was happy with it

At Boonah Rally, the Winnebago mob were flogging a wind generator. Not sure of brand, but the body closely resembled the SilentWind. Can't remember if the tail carried that artwork, but I'm almost certain the blades were blue!
If it looks like a duck...

I stood under it having a natter with Max Mayo, and the generator blades were going 10 to the dozen. I was afraid it would take off! But it didn't interfere with our conversation. So I reckon it's accurately named.
The $2000+ price-tag put me off placing an order...

BTW,
While in Townsville 3 years ago, saw a m/h enter town with a wind-generator lashed to the back, blades peeping above his roof-line. The blades had to be 1.5m long! And rotating as he drove... :o

I've read some reviews from users (boaties) say the main problems are , needs wind above 13knts (whatever) and the controller is flakey. Like GreyNomad said at $2000 you would need to do some real research first.
