Samsung Galaxy S5 phone - software upgrade...

Post by Chuck »

Cupla days ago I received a notification indicating 'Marshmallow' software upgrade was ready for downloading, so, complied & downloaded it.

The phone is relatively new to me so naturally assumed this was a basic requirement for the phone.

Seems that it wasn't a requirement but an option.

It has changed the layout completely & I now detest it as it mow makes what were previously automatic functions no longer automatic but requires searching for the relevant function keys/apps rather than having the commonly used ones at ones fingertips. :x

Have contacted Mr Google a few times to ascertain if it's possible to delete this 'upgrade' & revert to what I had previously.

So far have not found a guaranteed procedure to do this, although a couple do make a few suggestions but cannot guarantee that they will work on each & every phone. :? :?

Even took the phone to a Samsung pop up shop in our local Westfields shopping complex but after 10 mins of punching keys, sighing with lots of frowning the end result was... "Nah, sorry, can't help with this one!"

Fanbloodytastic!

Any ideas, suggestions, thoughts that might be of benefit...

Chuck, have you tried a factory reset, that should take you back to the android version you had. Not sure if that works on your phones, as I always buy cheap phones which seem to have more ability and freedom to do things, than the expensive brand names.

I inadvertently downloaded an update on my Mpie which I hated and just did a factory reset, which took me back to the original software, as well as removing all my contacts, messages and calls. Didn't know you had to keep your data on an sd card for safety, now have put in a card and everything goes onto that, so if i stuff it up again the reset won't matter. Don't think you can put your apps on the card, but I only have firefox so it doesn't matter and soon, will be changing my phone to linux ubuntu, then it will be fully compatible with my computer systems and no spying or hacking.

You can't downgrade via the phone interface unfortunately Chuck. If you absolutely can not find something in the new release to love other than the intangible security improvements, then you can downgrade via USB using a computer as host. First off... you'd need to find the correct flash. Then, someone to help you apply it.

If you feel like a read, with a view to the challenge, check out the relevant subforum at XDA Developers.

The most annoying thing is how persistent the upgrade nags are. You can dismiss them, but they will return after a power cycle.

Cheers,
Steve

Uh, Chuck,
At the risk of Great Scorn being heaped upon my head.
Have you considered buying a phone with The Alternative OS?
My iPhone 4 works just fine, and upgrades don't mess with the interface unless I specifically choose to integrate changes.
If you don't want to carry the mini-tablet sized apple 6, there is a 5S which is just millimetres larger than my older 4. :D

Thanks all.

Hmm, at this stage think I'll continue to blunder through with the mess I've got, at least, that is, until I find someone with enough grey matter to understand the problem & have the ability to solve it.

The most annoying thing about this software update is that the Navigator has the same model phone & hers updated just fine !!

Go into the nearest pub, Chuck, and ask a teenager to help you.

Try to find a nine-year-old... they're more in tune with the new stuff! ;)

but hopefully they aren't in the pub  Most of the younger crowd use the fix by upgrade method, just buy the latest model if there is an issue with the one they have now. I'm still baffled why anyone would want a phone that now also needs an up-to-date virus program to keep it operational, fruit machines included, the days of cyber attack being only windows related are long gone, the attack on server software which is the same base as Apple and that alternative operating system uses means everyone is vulnerable these days. Apparently one of the latest things is to take over your data/phone account and use it for their illegal activities, except you don't even know it's happened until you get a monster excess data bill and no way to prove it wasn't you, then the cyber cops are on your case for the illegal activities via your data account, still think my dumb phone is way in front ;)
