saved space

Post by BobnBev »

Hi All, The van came with 2 spare wheels on the back, I needed to carry the genny and 2 jerrys there. This what I came up with.

That took some getting there, What there is in side to hold the winches up are SS plates under the bed to take the weight.
And the nut on the winch is the same as the legs, The Honda and Jerrys sit very neatly on the back now instead of in the tug...

Where did you buy the chain winch blocks from Bob, looks like a great idea, not an issue with the added weight of the 2 spare wheels and the generstor and jerry cans on the rear of the van? I wonder how it would go with the spares above the axles to centre the weight, would there be enough clearance there? Getting them in and out from under the van could be a bit tricky as well I guess. What about up the front? Or would that creat excess ball weight? There sure is a lot to think abot as far as weight distrubution with a caravan, motorhomes and 5'ers just need to keep the total on the legal side

Just a little story....
I had a trailer that I carried out Diahatsu Charade on & made up a tyre carrier very similar to that.
Just North of Dubbo I was following a car & trailer that had a deep freezer on it.
The lid flew open & it ripped off & came straight at me the same time as a car was coming towards us.
Luckily it landed flat just in front of me so I straddled it as much as I could.
The air suction/pressure lifted it up & it hooked on the spare tyre under the trailer & broke the chain.
How it got under the axle I have no idea but I noticed it bouncing behind me & I walked back & got it.
No damage to anything except a little gravel rash on the tyre.
The bits of plastic & insulation going in all directions behind me was an awful sight!!!

Hi Bob & Bev, that looks a great idea with that pully system might have to have a closer look at the set up with our spare under the bus.

Hi People, Terry they come with every tojo at the back 10-15 $ from the wreckers, just look for a late model..
So they should hold the weight of the much smaller mag. wheel ( I hope)
I figure that moveing them to the front and then adding the Honda and 2 jerrys at the back should be even,
There is no room under the axels as I fitted a 75 Lt SS drinking water tank there with its own pump ect.
At the moment Im piching a idea from a guy that put a blower with a air cleaner on his van to put pressure in the van to keep the dust out. Should be simple!!!!! yer right......

Boss I have given that a little thought and dont like what I think, NAR they will stay there( i hope).... One has to think that way, or stay home!!.

Dot I realy dont think the small winches would hold a 10.00 truck tyre and rim. I used to be able to carry a 8.25.20 up the back and on to the roof rack, when we had a bus. Not now though,( the ladder would break) back I mean.....

OK. I'm a little confused here Bob. The first pic looks like the wheels are under the rear of the van... but ... in the third pic the join in the chassis - on the LHS of the pic - possibly indicates they are under the front LHS just where the chassis narrows down into the draw bar. If that is correct then I can see where the balancing act comes in. Still not sure about the jerry cans on the arse end though.

I get it now (I think) they are one behind the other up the front, not down the back side by side, very clever.

Sorry people, I didnt explain it very well, The winches you get from the wreckers and the are on most tojo trays bodys,
The wheels are under the LHS up front, The draw bar is double so no dramers there.

Never had any problems with diesel on the back Chuck, would think twice about petrol..That would be streching it a little..
