Uluru national park closed, scores shelter from flash floods in Central Australia
A massive Christmas night storm and heavy rain that has sparked damaging flash floods in Central Australia is being described as a once-in-a-half-century weather event by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).
A quarter of the community of Kintore has been evacuated after it was drenched by 232mm of rain in the 24 hours since 9am yesterday — taking the December total to a record 373.4mm.
61.4mm fell from 8:00pm to 9:00pm on Christmas night alone, which BOM labelled a one-in-50-year rainfall event.
Northern Territory police said it had caused significant flash flooding woes for the 400 people living in Kintore, which is located about 520km west of Alice Springs near the Western Australia border.

What makes that more serious than ordinary 'rainfall'?

We have 'earthquake events', 'car accident events', 'sale events', entertainment events'...
Won't be long and we'll have 'event events'!

(Not criticizing you, Lance. It's the press release language that annoys me.)

It wasn't ordinary rainfall Ray, it was an unusually heavy and prolonged rainfall, so that may qualify it as an unusual event.Greynomad wrote:A rainfall event, huh?Lance wrote:Uluru national park closed, scores shelter from flash floods in Central Australia

Sorta like everyone on a forum agreeing on a particular topic outcome, that would be an unusual event...............

Yep, I wish I was there to see the rock during a storm like that.

Perhaps school kids, and in particular kids at sub-editor school, should be encouraged to read Dorothea Mackellar's poem, My Country - "of droughts and flooding plains"
It amazes me how many times I have seen "one in a hundred year" year events in one life time. By my calculations I should have only seen three quarters of them once!

You get a letter from the Queen once you've seen them all Steve!!! Hang in there mate.... we're all backing you.....
Might not be a Queen then though? Might be a President of the Australian Republic or something? (Or a Grand Mufti?)

Likely the latter. Our grand kids and great grand kids are going to curse us.
End of discussion. Sorry, I realized after I wrote that, we don't do politics or religion.

Re: Uluru national park closed - Flash flooding
Hmmm..... the waterfalls off the rock would have been great to see, but not so sure I would have wanted to be there, a tad wet under foot after 232mm rain falls on rather flat country.
Does that water flow into the Murray? It could do with a top up
But I think it ends up in Lake Eyrie, not sure if it boils off after that or if it actually makes it to the ocean.
Looking a satellite image of the area you can see that it did once, maybe it will again.....
