Where is this?

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

:? HMMmmm...
Lost interest in where this one is?
OK, it's Karumba, FNQ, on the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Taken from the tables on the forecourt outside the pub.
There's a small mud-flat/island in the water, covered in Mangrove trees.
Also signs about every 12ft on pine-log barriers, warning of the presence of Crocodilicus Enormousii, and not to swim there. The day we took this pic there was an idiot local standing thigh-deep in the water, calmly fishing. :o
Yer carn't legislate against stupidity...

OK, an easier one now.

Many of you have visited this town, and the attraction where you'll find this shallow depression (about 18" deep) DUG into the ground.
WHERE is it, WHAT is it, and WHY was it (and many others like it) dug?
HINTS:
1. They were dug in the 20th Century.
2. They are NOT graves.
3. They are NOT slit-trenches.

Let's hear your guesses!! :D

Ray, Is it around the Castlemaine/ Chewton area of Vic where an aquaduct was dug by hand for the gold rush of the 1850's/60's.
Dot, It can't be kiwis because everyone knows that Abel Tasman discovered New Zealand, so he must have been before them.

I'll go with metal detector triggered digs looking for gold, maybe around the Ballarat area?

- Dot: Not Hangi holes, - not deep enough.
- David: It would be a pretty useless aqueduct: they're all about 6ft long. Besides, they were dug in the 20th Century, not the 19th. There's about a dozen of them still visible (some only just), although I believe there were originally about 30. One is kept swept (relatively) clear for visitors to marvel at.
- T1: You won't find any gold here... they were dug for something far more valuable. ;)

Sorry, T1,
The bottoms of the holes are sealed, so no underground crops, legal or otherwise.
Dot, I like your thinking, but not blasting powder.
However, some blasting was indirectly involved.
Now cogitate on that one, you cryptic crossword puzzlers.
Think mid-20th Century... ish.
