Solar 'Paint' ??

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

Solar 'Paint' ??

Post by Lance »

This Paint May Pick Up Where Solar Panels Leave Off
It produces hydrogen fuel, the cleanest known source of energy.

This new product from Victoria's RMIT ppl sounds a bit unrealistic, but ya just never know do ya.......
The report is from NBC News in the US and I'm curious as to why it hasn't been fanfared here in Oz.

Thanks for posting Lance. Good find!

A couple of slip slops and my Bonneville might be hydrogen powered. :)

I wouldn't get too excited just yet jg, it could be a while before the big green shed has it on the shelves. ;)

I would imagine the same area covered in solar and used to power an electrolyser would be more productive. There is so far no membrane that can separate hydrogen from oxygen, these 2 gases mixed is the cause of lead acid battery explosions so not a good combination to store compressed.
Oxygen liquefies at around -218*C and hydrogen at around -252*C so it is possible to compress/cool/compress the mixed gases and could be separated that way. The technology to store them in liquid state is already widely used in rockets and the space program. There is also a technology for combining hydrogen with carbon dioxide to for methane gas (natural gas) and we already have the infrastructure to pipe and compress natural gas to a liquid.
The problem is energy produced compared to energy used to create a fuel that can be stored and transported. The CSIRO have developed a process for storing hydrogen as ammonia liquid http://www.ammoniaenergy.org/csiro-memb ... drogen/and actually produces more hydrogen than compressed hydrogen because the hydrogen from water is actually a mix of 2 different types of hydrogen, para and ortho where the hydrogen from ammonia is pure.... but I'm not sure if it's pure para or ortho but I guess they know  Ammonia liquid is easy to make and the resources https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammonia_p ... production and could be a practical method of storing excess electrical energy produced by wind and solar in an easier to store form.
With all these new processes just hitting the news again a paint that produces hydrogen ends up a long way down the ladder as far as useful in the short term discoveries.
