Scones

Post by GoinBush »

Does anyone have a 'like Nana used to make' scone recipe please? I just made some and I don't like that recipe at all. The bottom was too biscuity...maybe I cooked them too long

Terries daughter makes scones from just flour and lemonade I think. I will try to get the recipe. They always taste good and it's almost bomb proof as she is, like her mother, not a real flash cook
I reckon that you can't beat the old self-raising flour and butter version though

Terrie's not a real flash cook!?!? Will you be dead meat for saying that? :o

I used the SR Flour and rubbed-in butter, milk, water, salt, sugar recipe and I don't know, they just weren't scrumdiddlyumptious.

And this is important, they're mustering here next month and guess what? I'm the cook. I am not a flash cook either. I don't do desserts and can only think of bread and butter pudd and asking Mum for her apricot sponge recipe. Oh, and maybe golden dumplings. Skeered

When one of the good cooks amongst us jumps in to help, I'm sure they will say that secret to scones is how you blend in the butter. If you can do golden syrup dumplings then you will be in with the mustering crew.
Do they muster with aircraft there or do they still do it the old way ?
Cheers

They trap the cattle here David. The troughs are in the yards and the yards are set up with in and out gates with bars like fingers the cattle learn to push.
(I'll get a photo) When you want cattle you just disable the out gates, the cattle come in to drink and can't get out. So, most of the work will be drafting what they trap.

Use the formula #3,1,1
# 3 self raising flour
! lemonade
1 cream
add a bit of baking powder to get a good rise.

Don't over mix ( rough is better ) and do Not Knead when mixed.
Leave sit for a little while as you get the oven up to 180 -200 ?
Then separate into scones, a little flour on the tray , and glaze with an egg mixed with a little milk.

Middle oven and turn around about half time during the baking,

Red plum/ rasberry jam with thickened cream and your done .
