Two great Queensland sites

Post by Greynomad »

Following PeterH's mention, we stayed at the Burdekin Sugar Cane Farmstay. A great overnighter! Owner Greg took us to see a cane burn prior to harvesting.
On theWikicamps app and Australian Farmstay website.
Second site is at Booyal, on the Southern approach to Bundaberg, 26km W of Childers. Camp alongside s/stn at Biggenden turnoff.
Manager's wife cooks excellent Indian meals! Also Oz menu if Indian is not your bag. If staying, say "Hi" to Kenny the Border Collie. Mgr will probably let you into the yard to throw Kenny's ball for him 😃, and share some garden produce. Grows his own herbs & spices for wife's cooking...😃
Check Wikicamps.
Regards & God bless,
Ray

Being retired cane farmers certainly recommend anyone staying at a cane farm farmstay. The sugar industry is the only one you can witnes from cutting plants, planting, fertilizing, watering, harvesting, sent to mill then if you can get a mill tour do the lot in a couple of days. Fewer and fewer cane farmers burning cane now so catch a fire if you can.
Time is passing too quickly so live life to the full with your spouse/partner while you still have she/he by your side.

Why do they not burn the cane before harvest now?

The harvest machines can now cut green cane years back they couldn't . Pollution from burning cane another reason (black rain) it was called this if you had your washing on the line with ash falling miles from the cane fields .
Bonus now as they now sell the cane mulch , there is a factory just around the corner from the Isis Mill that sells it you can buy it in Bunnings .
