I didn't know lithiums were around when the phrase " throw a spanner in the works " was coined or is it a quick way of bottom balancing ?

:o Spammers or spanners? I often refer to the story of how Plasma Boy got his name, a very interesting read with a lot of safety messages to be taken from it. The Plasma Boy story was using lead acid batteries and not lithium batteries, so not just a lithium battery problem ;) Check out the bolt, it is about to turn into a puddle, yet the copper terminal block hasn't melted, the aluminium one at the other end is glowing though

Picture the result of that spanner across a 400Ah 12v battery, the photo is a 3.2v 100Ah cell  With a bit of care you could actually resistance weld 2 x 1" pieces of steel bar together using a 100Ah 12v battery. Imaging what a 24v, 48v and the electric vehicle 720v battery packs could do

There is a lot of energy stored in any type of battery, even the little 9v square ones, the length of time that current can be maintained is the part that is different. The other interesting thing is that cell hasn't even started to bulge due to heat build up, that means it is not having much difficulty making that spanner glow. A lead acid battery would have exploded before the spanner actually started to glow, so much for the experts telling us how dangerous lithium batteries are and that they will explode. That photo shows just how safe the LiFeP04 cells are, not even any vapour from the cell vent, possibly a bit from the burning plastic and melting spanner though

Back in 1977, watched a bush mechanic weld up a track on a bulldozer with just a couple of batteries. He was out to the farm I was working on when the D8 snapped a track link, he ran the local garage and used to do some work with him. He was out there fixing a Fordson major that didn't want to start.

I was covering the wall of a 20acre dam we'd constructed, when backing down the inside face, a link snapped and was stuck at quite an angle, about 40ft from the bottom of the bowl. It was an old cable D8, ex army so crash everything. Couldn't take it out of gear or she would trundle down the face, wrecking the tracks and drive train. It might have tipped over if one of the tracks had locked up, as it was, had to keep the blade low to keep her balanced when not pushing.

Asked the mechanic if he could go and get his Wisconsin portable welder, which was driven by a petrol engine and produced heaps of amps, as well as 12v and 240v. He came over to the D8 and said, no way can I get the welder onto the top of the wall and don't have long enough leads, he smiled at me and said, come on we can fix this. Went to his truck, pulled out 2 big tractor batteries and welding leads, put the batteries in wheel barrows, slid them down the face and connected them together. Connected the negative to the track and he touch welded it together, which was enough for me to get the dozer to a better spot to be fixed properly.

Never seen it since, thought of doing it myself, but never got round to it and got my own Wisconsin for my Snowy mountains farm, so didn't need it. Ended up with a welder and 12/240v generator, which made our off grid life so much better.

You can buy the whole battery/stick welder kit on line. It would be a must for anyone who spent a lot of their travel time well off the beaten track. We have enough battery power to drive the mig so no need for us to get one ... but then 8-)

Need those vulcanpro rods  we told people we repaired our fibreglass boat with Epicraft rods and the wooden one we used Aquadhere rods at very low amps so we didn't catch the wood on fire. It is amazing just what some people will believe and they get upset when you tell them you are pulling their leg
