Port Augusta

Post by Chris »

Hi all.

I have been looking at camps 6 for camping around Port Augusta and according to the book # 750 is Port Augusta Motor Home park.

I have just done a search on the camp site and found that the area is only for motor homes no caravans or camper trailers. I don't know how new or old this information is. Can anyone tell me if this is correct?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Chris

Caravans and campers can stay in the motorhome park at Port Augusta only if they are self contained.
The park is operated by the Central Augusta Football & Community Sporting Club, 3 Hannagan Street, Port Augusta. Phone no 08 8642 4122.

The sign at the gate says "Exceptions may be made on application" (or something like that).
I reckon no-one who asked has been knocked back, self-contained or not.
Still, at $5/pvpn it's good value, and you meet the nicest people...
Regards & God bless,
Ray

I believe you MUST have a toilet onboard to stay.

Call them to check if necessary (08) 8642 4122

No doubt a bit late for the OP, but for future reference:-

There was a dump point when we stayed there. There was also a most unpleasant stench wafting across from the nearby water. Others have reported petty theft incidents, although we had no such problems. Many feel that this is a worthwhile spot. Although I consider it is better than the rip off CP's in town (including the one which was advertising 'powered & unpowered sites' & when asked the costs of each told us that powered & unpowered sites were the same price!) it really is nothing more than a small walled in car park.

If prepared to stop a few kilometres south of Port Augusta Hancocks Lookout is a great free camp. No facilities but out in the bush with fantastic views & sunsets. Access is via a track through farms from off Horrocks Pass (the road that passes through the hills between Wilmington & Port Augusta). Check the Camps book, it's in there.

Cuppa would the "Access is via a track through farms " be suitable for big MH's or is it a 4WD track?

Just an up & down gravel road Bruce.
We took our Civilian plus trailer in there without problem.
Not sure about Big Rigs - I think the road in would be manageable, but might need a multi point turn to leave. I would't like to say if it would be suitable for the bigger rigs never having driven one, but fine for most motorhomes. There were folks with large caravans there when we visited.

Another good alternative to Port Augusta are the Showgrounds at Melrose, could drive a road train into there. Pleasant surroundings just out of town, caretaker, hot showers & reasonably priced. Friendly little town just below the Goyder line.
