Rear Facing Camera
Our motor home is fitted with a reversing camera and we feel we need a rear facing camera. My question is can an auto electrician tweak the reversing camera so that it stays on all the time, therefore becoming a rear facing camera as well? If this is not possible can anyone recommend a good brand of rear facing camera with an estimated cost for the camera and installation? Are we best to have this done at time of manufacture or retro fitted? Thank you

Re: Rear Facing Camera
Easy as, it either gets it's power from the reversing switch (that turns on your reversing lights) or uses that power as a signal to turn on, just needs a feed from the ignition instead

Re: Rear Facing Camera
As William said, easy enough to do but it may not give you what you want.
They use different cameras for rear facing cameras than reversing cameras. They have different focal lengths so with a reversing camera you can see what is close to you while a rear facing cameras you generally see off into the distance. I have a switch on my reversing camera but when I use it while driving all I can see is any car tailgating me. I cant see anything more than 20 feet behind me.
If I was you I would try sitting on a quiet street with your vehicle in reverse and see if you can see far enough back with your camera before paying for a switch. If the camera doesn't show you what you want you could possibly get a second camera fitted which uses the same screen as your reversing camera and be able to switch between the two.

Dot may be able to help. I know that she has taken some rear facing photos.

Thanks again everyone, the hunt is on for a good hardwired rear facing camera that will fit over the rear view mirror as that is instinctively where we will look to see what's behind us.

The cameras are pretty cheaP these days, and you may find you have a spare input on your monitor. That might give you better viewing options, you could have one for backing and one as a view camera.

Just installing an additional camera feeding his current monitor may not give him what he wants. If he wants to record what the camera sees then he needs some form of hard disc or USB stick.
