Camping areas between Mannum & Swan Reach

Post by BruceS »

Went for a cook's tour today.
Started at Mannum, along Purnong Rd to Purnong, over the ferry, further North to Nildotte & then Swan Reach, over the ferry to the Western side of the River and on to Sedan, Cambrai & back to Mannum.
I was surprised to find quite a few of the smallish, free camping areas with so few people camped there.
I didn't look at Walkers Flat or Wongulla but Purnong was empty, Western side of Swan Reach had a few in it but room for 8-10 more.
Swan Reach has a toilet & dump point there as well.
Nildotte roadside stalls had peaches, apricots, oranges and butternut pumpkins at good prices.
1kg peaches @ $4
1kg apricots @ $4 ($2 a kg at Mypolonga though but min of 10kg)
Oranges ... 10 for $2. (Valencia)

Bruce I went thru that area last week and the ferry man told me that most of the free camps had been under water and some still were that muddy you could not drive thru them.
PS, nice pub at Sedan.

Beware of the Purnong campsite.
Right next to the levee bank, and at this time, probably lower than the river level.
This is what happens in these circumstances:

Update, we have just driven from Renmark all along the Murray and it is as beautiful. We have now done the trip (in parts) from the source to (close to) the mouth. The part from Renmark down was a hoot. Crossed every ferry we could, spoke to done great ferrymen! Swan Reach camp area was fantastic, we struggled to leave there. A shout out to the local takeaway right there at the ferry crossing, best onion rings I have had in years! Stayed at a Mannum too, across the river, ducks are super friendly when you try to eat a sanger outside!

Thoroughly recommend the SA Murray trip, very pretty!

I've heard the reference to using the ferry, what sort of restrictions i.e length/weight are there re SA ferries.
