Still relevant though? Price of fuel in Australia is just not justified.
There is a lot of oil in Australian wells that is just sitting there. The fuel companies are mostly USA so it's in their interests to import & sell the more expensive oil.
Australian crude oil is a heavier crude that results in much more distillate being produced per barrel than imported oil.
Remember when diesel was much cheaper than petrol? Yep was Aussie oil being refined here. Not many refineries here now?
Gov like it because their excise duties are bigger the higher the price. Same as smokes.

Are there any refineries still operating in Aust? As far as I know it all comes from a Singapore refinery and we pay US$ for the product plus shipping plus import duties plus GST for it to pass through the docks and again when it passes through the bowser with company profit, excise, road tax and reseller profit all added before the bowser price GST is added. So we pay a tax on a tax that was already applied multiple times .... no wonder they are panicking about the future disruption when all vehicles move to electric and hybrid renewable fuel generators including solar because they can't tax any of those unless they are mixed with a fuel that already attracts an excise. How will they tax a recharge that is free if you eat at their restaurant? If the same outlet charges a huge battery bank via solar and other renewable sources they aren't actually buying in electricity that can be taxed.
Ever wondered about all the servo roof tops now covered in solar? They might be reselling to the grid now, but they are recording data on potential harvest per sq mtr of solar coverage. In the not too distant future expect to see big solar arrays at ground level or undercover parking with massive solar arrays on the roof

That was the old road tax charged on truckies that sparked the Razor Back road blockade to have it abolished. It might work in NZ where you can near see every coast if you stand on a soapbox in the middle, but 'stralya is a big place so how could they police it?

Hopefully with some difficulty ! I had a diesel landrover in the mid 80s that I never paid mileage on. Previous owner didnt either. Probably more difficult these days to get away with it. Regardless, its a way off yet, but once electric trucks become viable, then I am sure something similar will happen
