Australian Trivia Only

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

Missed Bruce's question. We were in Minyip about 6 weeks ago- wonderful butcher where we got fresh fish up from Melb markets.

I'll throw one in to fill the gap.
The Stump Jump Plough is a well known Australian invention, but why was it required and who is credited for the first model?

Smith brothers two years before Stott, as the name inplies it was designed to go over the stumps insted of farmers having to dig out all the stumps

Yes, it was the Smith Bros, well one at least who patented the first design, but there was a particular problem that the plough was designed to overcome and even though the name suggests one thing it was actually a different problem that necessitated its design.

If old memory is correct it had something to do with using the Mallee Roots as a fuel of some description

The plough could handle the roots but the farmers use to burn them of. The brothers then built a power staion across the road from the factory and ran underground cable from the powerstation to the factory. Burn the roots and use the gas and heat to produce power for the factory complex

Correct on both counts, it was only later discovered the plough worked well in the rocky country as well, something SA also seems to grow a lot of  Anyone remember how it worked?

Yep. Operated one for a short time.
The machine 'jiggled' the stones along a 60 degree row until it left a row of stones that then entered an elevator that loaded the tip truck.
If they were hard, flinty stones we took them into the stone crusher that then fed them into a sizing screen to sort them into 3 dif sizes & ejected any/all dust.
The resulting stone was used in the concrete plant.
One of the noisiest jobs I ever had!!!
If the rock was only soft limestone they were dumped in heaps along fence lines or around trees etc. I bet everyone has seen them along roadsides?
