"Well I'll be buttered on both sides" he said, or words similar :o
Today was the big slide the battery in day. Had to wait till last so we could get access to that area and under the vehicle to completely re-arrange the wiring harness so we could separate the 240vac cabling from the 12v cabling .... basic Aust standards stuff

This was/were these slight issues were discovered
Vic battery 2.jpg
Vic battery 3.jpg
First the door catch assembly needed a bit of re-engineering. Next, as you can see, not a lot of clearance above the battery end plate where it meets the door hinge. The slides have a roller bearing at the end of the battery tray section and a roller bearing at the end of the fixed section of the slide. One roller must pass over the top of the other roller and then slot in behind it. You guessed it, roller diameter is slightly larger than clearance available. A bit of manoeuvring and we passed that hurdle. The next bit was getting over the detents designed to stop the drawer sliding all the way out and landing on your feet ..... won't go on one side.
The airbag inflators installed since last visit seem to want to take up the same space as the battery needs to fit in the hole

An interesting thread. Picked up a few bits and pieces of info but have a couple of questions please.

1. What is an Avida?
Kind of a basic question isn't it? A motorhome of some sort obviously. Any chance of a pic? Are the pics posted by vic what you are working on?

And....

Can you suggest a minimum clearance needed for everything above the upper surface of a Winston cell please? I could use that info for my own build.

Cheers

An Avida is just an Australian built motorhome originally calling itself Winnebago, but apparently without the actual Winnebago USA approval to use their name. Lots of court trips and money later they had to change their name and chose Avida.
Clearance above the cells needs to be enough to see the fuses and get both hands in to replace a fuse, check bolts are tight and possibly fit 2 small alligator clips across a cell in the event a cell rebalance is required. A rare event and most commonly caused by the owner trying to fix something that wasn't broke, resulting is a much bigger job time wise to sort it out.
In the case of a slide-out battery pack, just need enough clearance for the lid that stops things falling across the cells and the battery cables to sit on top of that so they can slide back and forth without getting caught up on the battery terminals causing possible damage and in the extreme, a short circuit between cells.
In the next series of photos you will see just how close that comes to not actually fitting

T1,
My understanding of the saga was that 'way back when', the bloque who then manufactured slide-ons & vans under the Freewind brand, visited the Great and Grand USofA, and went to see the Head Honcho at Winnebago & asked if he could use the name in Australia. Said H.H. apparently responded "Where? Where the hell is Orstralya?" and OKd the deal on a handshake... no documentation. That was the Freewind bloque's downfall. ;)
Eons later, Winnebago US discovered where Australia is, and decided that, with that much Wide Open Space (where the buffalo roam?), there just might be some pocketmoney in selling here.
Enter the Legal Vultures... Stage Right.

 Never let the truth or facts get in the way of a good story  Freeway went belly up on the Friday and Winnebago started production on the Monday. Can you actually imagine an American allowing the free use of their trading name, no licencing or restrictions, just open slather to make as much as you like from our trading name .... seriously, not one of those things American's are well known for is it

Yes belive it or not Terry, Avida did have the right to use the name. It was either 1973 of 78, I can't remember now. But they lost the initial court challenge but won the high court appeal. So obviously there was sufficient evidence to prove that. The decision to change the name to Avida was carried out after the first ruling as they were smart enough to know it was just going to be a costly exercise. Either way, as much as some don't like some of the work carried out by them they are still far superior to the current winnebagos that are being made here by one of the cheaper MH manufacturers.
