Opal Tower, Sydney

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

Sub strength steel reo bars in the concrete rusting and failing to add strength to the over all structure because the concrete mix was too wet and didn't actually contain enough cement to bind it all together? Who knows, hopefully there will be a genuine enquiry into the issue and followed up by investigations into other projects that use similar materials that were certified by the same engineers.
Remember the Wollongong showground grandstand roof getting nearly torn off in the wind a few yrs back? Same problem, someone cutting corners and using below spec materials.
The rate building fall over in China, one must be suspect about the building materials and practices used there, why would they expect something different to happen when used over here?

They use precast concrete slabs today and fast drying concrete. Precast slabs are no where near as strong as poured slabs and when you use chemicals to speed up a natural process, you create future problems. There are thousands of high rise and commercial building using precast fast drying concrete around Aus, none use real concrete or proper drying periods before moving and installing the slabs. It used to take over 100 years for modern concrete to dry out. The Romans concrete after thousands of years, it still strong and doesn't corrode. Today the dry out within months or a few years, then start to crack allowing air and moisture to intrude onto the reo, then the concrete crumbles. Looking the photo's I'd guess crumbling and lack of integral strength in the precast is the problem and can't be fixed if all the slabs are the same quality.

When you precast, fast dry, then transport slabs, they are subjected to lots of vibrations and there is always air bubbles in precast slabs, compared to poured. It's like everything today, convenience, speed and reducing costs. Never about longevity safety or value for money.

Hmmm
:? That's what I fear will be the outcome.
However, I'll bet the "inquiry" finds it can be remedied with chewing gum and sticky tape.

Especially when they have discovered new cracks.
