Truma trauma

Post by 2foot6 »

My second Tuma water heater is now leaking,  not bad 4.5 years average for each unit.Truma now have a new model called Ultra ,does any one have one of these units and are they an efficient unit as they have a 1400 watt element compared to the older models with a 850 watt element?

I am wondering what other members of the forum have done in choosing a replacement water heater as I don't have much confidence in Truma anymore..........Peter.

A few extra bucks & get gas as well Vik, even if you never use it. (backup for when your element goes bye bye)
I think the Truma ones are totally different shape? Tank sits upright not horizontal.

Truma don't use an anode as it's Stainless Steel .

The problem is ,although it's made of stainless steel,it's a low grade and corrodes on the joint of the boiler,a common problem in the gas/ electric model caused by electrolysis....Peter

Isn't that why our gas/electric HWS is fitted with a sacrificial anode? :?

Well, one of the reasons, the different minerals in the various water supplies around Aust have a rather nasty effect on just about any metal. It will even eat into 316 stainless that is deemed to be food grade. It actually eats away the metal casing on the electric element if the anode replacement routine is ignored, resulting in a big short circuit with the heater and that usually kills the whole thing.

The Truma's don't have a sacrificial anode,I'm starting to think the whole unit is the sacrificial anode.  .............Peter.

Is it well earthed to the vehicle body? The tank shell included, otherwise the water becomes the conductor and simply nibbles holes at any point that is a better conductor than the rest of the tank.

Will check the earth tomorrow Terry.I don't remember a separate earth.Only the earth for power earthing, that will go back to the RCD.I assume the power earth is earthed to the chassis somewhere..................Peter.

Terry, the earth is present at the chassis ,gas pipes and the power earth.I should also mentioned the leakage on the outside of the water unit cover(outside on the motorhome wall) is RUSTY.................Peter.
