Re: Australian Trivia Only
Yeah, relised it was built by NSW Rail to join into the existing rail network, that was why I couldn't find where it ended

Re: Australian Trivia Only
In 1849, the Sydney Railway Company started building the first railway track in New South Wales between Sydney and Parramatta—a distance of 22 km. The project ran into financial difficulty and was taken over by the New South Wales colonial government. The line opened on 26 September 1855.

Re: Australian Trivia Only
It could have been a drift line that carted ore carts out and returned them down a mine. With the right incline it could be a steam powered winch used to move the train out of the mine so it would be considered the train ran up the line as well as down so would be running up hill as well as down hill.BruceS wrote: ↑Mon May 27, 2019 1:50 pm In 1849, the Sydney Railway Company started building the first railway track in New South Wales between Sydney and Parramatta—a distance of 22 km. The part of the question I don't quite understand is the proposed terminate, surely the train service terminated at both ends? To run back down the line was a new service run.

Re: Australian Trivia Only
The catch is that there were TWO terminals (termini?):
Bathurst & Goulburn

Hmmm. For some reason the actual text isn't expanding when clicked.
Anyway, the Sydney Railway Company is correct. The year was 1848.
SRC was taken over by NSWGR before it could open the Bathurst & Goulburn lines, due to "financial difficulties". Read into that what you will...
NSWGR ran its first steam train from Sydney to Parramatta (now Granville) Station in 1855.
YOUR TURN, BRUCE...
Bathurst & Goulburn

Re: Australian Trivia Only
It's known as the "Line of Lode" but I think it's more recently known as South Broken Hill Mine?
We used to have a next door neighbor who spent years of his early working life down the mine.

Re: Australian Trivia Only
I will take a stab at 6km of tunnel and about I km deep, only because that is what is supposed to be the length/depth of the Extended Long Tunnel gold mine at Walhalla Vic.
Cheers
