Didn't work with an 8 track either ..... now we're stretching the age/memory barriers

I vividly remember recommending my father instal an 8-track in his car, because the quality was far better than the competing cassette stereo.
(I’d been using 8-tracks on radio for a few years.)
When the VHS/Beta argument was in full swing I declined to make any recommendation, despite believing that Beta gave a better picture.
I’d learned my lesson… ;)

Both were a valuable tool in marketing and accessibility that many companies still ignored ..... A123 lithium batteries was one such company that comes to mind. They only wanted to deal with major companies and not sell to "joe public" they paid the price by going belly up, even though they made a far superior product at the time ..... Imagine if they had made a rewritable DVD sized data storage disc that didn't jump tracks as it went over bumps, download once and it's yours to keep. Simple to store and copy to a blank disc the bits you wanted to keep. Solid state drives would never have been developed, they cost heaps more and are prone to simply dropping dead with next to no chance of recovering the data ..... at least the spinning disc hard drive could be harvested for the information when its drive failed ...... but the jump on a bump was still an issue .......
Thumb drives (flash drive) are great ... well, until the stop working, backing up 2TB (the largest out there at the moment) to a second 2TB flash drive and putting that away some where safe???? is there a place that flash drives are safe from failure?

They are still finding ancient scripts written on parchment and animal skins or walls, will today's knowledge be accessible to future generations if there is crash of the cloud technology ......

You know you're old when you can even reflect on the possibility that cloud technology might be a mistake ...... and rambling isn't restricted to walking :o

And that is why the printed word will always be there. Books. I would rather read a book than an electronic version.

I had a quick lesson on getting old last week.
We were at Moora and went for a walk in the township, big mistake as Phyl found a "cheap shop".
But we went into the local museum, that's when the "Getting Old" started.
I ended up discussing with the woman running the place how to correctly use most of the stuff on display, including an old International Harvester, Fowler header and a horse-drawn dump scoop that was used for clearing / excavating dams, ( similar, to a front end loader idea ) that were in the yard along with a heap of other horse-drawn gear.

All this was a product of touring/working around Aus from my miss spent youth from the middle 60's to the 80's and not refusing any work that was offered. :P
Not every farm had all modern equipment in those days and the small cockies were still transitioning from horse-drawn small stuff to tractor power. ( I'd driven a few of the tractors in the yard as well ).
I left the museum thinking I should have a Vintage Model printed T shirt ;)

Deja vu!
I have also visited small county town museums only to find tools in glass cases identical to some still in use in my toolbox! (Most of them inherited from my father — a couple that I bought new! )
Some have been mis-identified, a situation I drew to their attention. 😁
On two occasions I have found items placarded “Can you tell us what this is?”… I did.
One was a 1920s vintage weight reduction ‘rolling pin’ type device which was like one my grandma used (didn’t work 😜).
The other was a kitchen utensil for lifting a roasting pan out of the oven. My mum had one. I was able to explain to the museum person how it was used. 😀
In Tasmania, the museum at Beaconsfield mine has a model of a blast furnace… with some parts mis-labelled. I identified myself to the manager, explaining that I had, among other things, once been PR for BHP’s Steel Division, and pointed out the errors. She promised to make the corrections.
Have not yet been back to check. 🤔😜😀
Maybe you should order two T-shirts…

Watching Wheeler Dealer with Edd China and Ant Anstead in later episodes, then Ant Anstad.... master mechanic the title said, building his early era race car based on the first Alfa Romeo race cars ..... I found myself correcting all the stuff they simply didn't understand themselves so had no hope of trying to explain it to the viewers ..... I realised I'd actually been working in the trade for 27 yrs before they were even born ...... that's when you know you're already old

T1,
I’ve seen a similar thing with a photo of the carpet under a lounge suite…
