Did the leak test/ pressure test and all things point to a failed seal on the compressor. Apparently not a serviceable item. The man gave me an open ended quote for between $800 and 2 grand. Depends on where it has to come from, OEM or aftermarket. Of course access is almost impossible due to the cab not be able to tilt. Not looking forward to tomorrow.
David would it be possible to replace the air con with a unit from another vehicle? Bob of Bob n Bev did that ....Other than that you may have to join forces with Paul on a street corner   G'man tried that some yrs ago but ended up he had to pay the clients

Maybe you should put a dual head split system air con in place of the motor driven unit, or get the spit system connected up to the in dash part of the Winnie. Then you can solar power the air con so no need to have the engine running and no hassles with failing belt driven compressors either.
The problem is caused by moisture getting past the outer edge of the seal, it combines with the refrigerant oil and creates an acid that eats away at the metal shaft eventually tearing the seal to bits.
A split system air con compressor unit is all in the one case, motor and compressor, so that problem can't occur.
You can get a low voltage compressor that will run off the alternator, but I wouldn't bother, rather expensive and not terribly energy efficient or all that good at actually delivering enough output for the really hot days.

Sent PM
This used to be my game many years ago.
If it's belt driven from the motor it can be replaced easily enough, just cost $$$$ as a compressor can be $600 or more / less.
Did the tech put some gas into it and do a leak test, or just vac it down, said it leaks, and that was it ?

It could be anything without this test, even down to hoses and dried out sealing "O" rings.
The mob I sent PM about are no longer in business so sorry for the false trail.

A split system driven by solar, Li ( and alternator when driving ) might be a better option and possibly better in the long run.

T1, We haven't got enough solar to power much yet, let alone a dual head splitty. I think I have convinced the minister of war and finance that we need a big increase in solar and a new fridge. The airco failing hasn't helped.
Ron, thanks for trying anyway.
I think that with a little help from JonD I might be onto a new compressor. :D

There are plenty of generic aircon compressors Dave. My next door put one on his Jeep when he sold it

Good morning everyone. It would be a pretty small caravan Bob. We had another little storm blow in yesterday arvo. Not a lot of rain but it was pretty blowy for a while then gone. Bernie, biggest problem I have is access. That's one of the down sides of not being able to tilt the cab. Its kinda like keyhole surgery. But there isn't a rush, I'll just go nice and easy.
Have fun at bowls Shirley.
How was the train Helen? Hope you enjoyed the day.
Safe travels everybody, have a great day.

Good morning all. It was quite a bit cooler overnight and we had a bit of rain.

Finally the repairs to the house are starting today, beginning with the demolition of a bathroom. Not really looking forward to the next few weeks but it will be a relief when finished. As there will be a skip bin deposited on our driveway today, we have moved the Motorhome to the hardstand here and are sleeping down there. Not sure how long management will allow us to stay there. Will just keep our heads down and hope they don’t notice how long we are there. 😉

Another lovely warm day coming up. Stay safe everyone.
Cheers
