What is the difference between an EV and a hybrid car?
An EV (BEV) has an electric motor and a big battery and can only drive on the electric motor if there is enough energy stored in the battery.
A Hybrid (HEV)has both a petrol motor and an electric motor and a much smaller battery. It is more expensive and heavier than the same model as a pure EV.
Some hybrids have a battery that can be plugged in to recharge (PHEV) as well as the petrol engine (ICE or Internal Combustion Engine) that can drive MG1 (Motor Generator) that doubles as the ICE starter motor as well as being driven by the ICE to recharge the battery as well as supply power directly to MG2. MG2 bother drives the vehicle and acts as a generator for slowing the vehicle down, known as regenerative braking.
As the models have improved, so has the range on the battery only in a PHEV, some up to 100kms or more, some hybrids have a combined range of over 1500kms these days, our 2006 Prius had a combined range of 1,000kms, it's getting a bit long in the tooth and we drive a bit harder than we did in the past, so it's down to around 800km for 45ltrs of unleaded, 900km for 45 ltrs of E10, both the Prius and the Winnie love E10, when we can find it .....
When the '06 Prius had the extended range battery in the back and we charged it from the Hino while at the workshop, we reached 2800kms on a tank full and we only filled it up because we weren't certain we could get home from Adelaide on what was left in the fuel tank ...... if we could have fast charged it, we would have only had to put fuel in to stop it going stale in the tank and causing problems ....
