Wreckers

Post by Pokey »

I haven't a lot of experience dealing with wreckers, mainly small stuff for cars. I am looking at a motor from one and wondering what is teh best way to deal with them. When they quote a price is it firm or does it have some flexibility?

Pretty important to know why the vehicle was sold to be wrecked. (in my opinion)
If it was a rollover or accident, how long did the motor run without oil & water?
As for price I think once the haggling is over by both parties the price is set.

One wrecker I dealt with had a policy of going up in price as the buyer tried to go down in price, and he remained firm with it too. Best to ask first, what is the warranty period? what is the conditions? if the engine is a dud will they find and fit a replacement? or just give you your money back when you return it. Some even try the credit for other goods act, that can be very difficult to finally get your money back. If the warranty is good and they will source another engine and fit it, with the same warranty period as the first, starting from the day they fit the new engine, and it's better than a 90 day warranty, I wouldn't haggle, you may well pay the price latter if a warranty claim eventuates.
