How many planels or amps can it take was think of taking my orignal solar panels of and replacing then with new one twice a big as the old ones did not realy want to change the old solar controller ok

with a 12v system a PL20 can handle 350w, 700w for a 24v system and 1400w for a 48v system. There is a method of expanding the ability of a PL20 or Dingo to handle over 100 amps or 1300w of solar at 12v, actually it can be expanded to handle any size system you want, let me know if you want me to tell you how that is done.

You won't have any problems with your PL20 on 400watts. At the very worst case it will shed any additional amps it may get. I have been operating mine on that for about 4 years.
