Both are good but one without the other will always cause grief.
For batteries to have a decent life you need to make sure you have more capacity than you really need on an average day IN WINTER & then you need enough charging capacity to ensure the batteries reach 100% charge MOST days regardless of how they get charged.
Most have a combination of mostly solar but the extra ability of using 240V charger, Alternator when driving or maybe even a generator.
Each setup is different.
You need to do up a complete list of estimated usage first and allow a margin.

The need for the 100% recharge doesn't apply to lithium ferrous batteries, so, more batteries gives you longer before you need to recharge, more solar will recharge faster if the weather is good and there are no shaddows where you parked. If you have alternator charging or generator charging to assist the solar and are happy to use this additional charging if needed, then more Li batteries is better.
