portable, collapsible Solar Powered Fridge

Post by aussiegirl »

Hi Everyone, I often receive emails from a solar energy company and tonight their site had one of these solar powered fridges advertised so I thought I would put it on here for anyone interested

The Collapsible Solar Powered Fridge/Freezer

by Energy Matters
Anywhere Fridge - solar powered
The Anywhere Fridge is a portable, collapsible, solar powered fridge-freezer and warmer. It's another solar tech development getting a start via crowdfunding.

The Anywhere Fridge will be available in 28 litre and 75 litre capacity. It can be charged via standard outlet, 12v car cigarette lighter or via the unit's embedded solar panels; which are also detachable.

Energy storage is in the form of a replaceable lithium-ion battery with a claimed 2000 cycle lifespan. The battery in the large unit is claimed to be sufficient to maintain function for up to 8-hours at full capacity in the absence of a charging source. For the smaller unit, run time is approximately 4-hours at full capacity.

The Anywhere Fridge also features 2 built-in USB charging ports; plus a retractable handle and wheels that can be used to transport the unit in either expanded or collapsed mode.

Both the small and large models have a thickness of just 13cm when collapsed. The small unit weighs 9kg and the larger model approximately 18kg.

Anywhere Fridge offers a fast-freeze function that its makers claim can achieve temperatures as low as -22C in 2 - 3 minutes.

The associated Indiegogo campaign has so far raised over USD $63,000. A pledge of USD $199 (plus USD $25 international shipping) gets you a small fridge with 28 litre capacity. The 75 litre version will set you back USD $499 + USD $45 if purchased via the crowdfunding campaign. The manufacturers state the pricing will be significantly higher once the Anywhere Fridge is made generally available.

While the makers state the unit is completely weather resistant; how the Anywhere Fridge would perform in terms of charging and maintaining temperature while left out in the brutal summer Australian sun isn't clear.

Looks like a good idea -8 deg F is cold enough for a good tinnie of liquid refreshment.

Hmmm..... maybe where you would be dressed like the model in the demo photos, fleecy lined parka, but not in the Aust sun. They use the Peltier effect modules to transfer the heat in or out of the cabinet, their limitation is 25*C from ambient, max. so when heated in the sun to 50*C the inside would be 25*C.... not quite a fridge and certainly not a freezer  The other point is they claim the unit can run at full power for 8 hrs without charging........ even in mid summer we don't have the sun up for long enough to limit the powered period to 8 hrs if we were relying on solar power. I wonder what chemistry Li batteries they are using? I'm guessing LiPo for the min size and weight, hope they have a good battery management set up, they are the battery cells that go up in flames if they are over charged.
