Noisy Coleman mach air conditioner

Post by SteveW »

My Coleman Mach roof mounted air conditioner is unbearably noisy, and it struggles in the high thirties. It's impossible to sleep with it on and a nuisance when trying to enjoy company. It is in a Jayco Optimum (26 ft) and is the same as we had in a Jayco Sterling - with the same problem. Has anybody replaced one of these with something that cools in hot weather and is not excessively noisy?

Is it the standard 14" x 14" hole in the roof? If so I think Bob has a Dometic one for sale in the Items for sale section on this forum. If that one is sold I am taking the one ou of the roof on the Mazda so that one would be available, I'd get it serviced before I sold it to be sure it worked properly. I'm not a rooftop air con person, split systems are ok but a vent and a fan suit me better. I bought one of those all bells and whistles Fantastic vent from the US, the price was heaps better than buying it here but I'll wait till it arrives to give it it's own thread about how good or otherwise it is.

Sound like ours, like all of them, in 12 years of caravanning and Mh'ing they all are too noisy and struggle in the heat. We don't sleep with it on in the cool mode, and use a diesel heater for warmth because the heating mode is also a bit sus as well. We have the Ibis - Aircommand in current MH but had the Coleman in earlier CV's.

They are only small units, trying to cool down a large area usually above your head so had to get away from. We normally use them when we are not in the RV.

I think theren are lemons in all brands.
To true, This was the second new one we had, I just sold the old van that had one fitted and it just pered along. They all come with the new gas now not R22, they were a little noisey with that gas.

Yes welcome to the friendly forum...

Thanks for the responses. This does seem to be a pig in poke! I will continue taking advice and as time goes by, I'll attempt to have demonstrations.

Hi Bob,
What gas are they replacing the R22 with, R290 or R417?

Hello Steve, when we ordered our Jayco Conquest the salesman said the standard aircon was always to noisey so we should upgrade to the ibis, Which is what we did. My question to him was why supply an aircon that is known to be noisey in the first place. He said to keep the overall price down.
Our Ibis is very quiet and does keep the MH cool during those hot days.

I might talk to Jayco/Page Bros about a change/trade in. Ours is just not funny. We don't have to worry about heating - put the diesel in.
