Tesla Electric cars

Post by cvtripper »

Interesting media take up on the Tesla release in Australia today (10/12/2014).

Needs a 40A charger which will "cost some up to $10,000 to install". Crikeys, I think I'll specialise in 40A socket installs!

Some interesting stats at the bottom of the article.
Price $100k-220k
Standard 270kW/440Nm standard - pretty impressive
Liquid cooled Lithium Ion (I assume LiFePO4) 60KWh or 85kWh (at 12V thats 5000AH/7100AH - yes, I know they run higher voltages but still it shows the relative battery capacity needed and cost of cells alone would be in excess of $30k) - makes my 700AH look pitiful!
Range 260-500km (if you want the longer range turn off the A/C)
0-100kph in 3.8sec
10 hours to recharge - that's a long "fill". I can imagine a bit of bowser rage in the long queues!
Sounds like they are really only suitable for city based cars at this stage but ok for short stints around the 'burbs, which would suit a lot of people.

And a very nice looking vehicle.

Some time ago the owner of Internode ran his Tesla in the Darwin to Adelaide race.
He took his own generator on the back of a truck.
Google : Tesla Darwin to Adelaide
I think I paid too much for my Internet to him? Plane, Tesla etc etc

Yes, article quoted an 8t truck to carry the generator. I guess that works!

Tesla use 18650 format Panasonic built cells, a bit like an over sized AA torch battery, 3.7v nom. so they are not LiFeP04 chemistry as they are only 3.2v nom. There are a number of speculations about the exact chemistry but I think Elon Musk plays that sort of detail fairly close to the chest. They can be recharged from a 10 amp powerpoint with a special adapter lead and box that has a sensor to determine what the max supply should be and limits it to less than that.
I am very interested in the Mitsubishi Outlander PH EV, but it can't be flat toed so that sort of squashed the interest so the plan reverts to converting the Kombi to all electric with a range extender of some type for the longer trip away from big bus or a power point.

Was the 8t truck electric or diesel? And what fuel did the genny use?

If they are powered by diesel, it sort of defeats the purpose, dunnit?
